About this deal

Although, all the coordinates in the advanced copy were the same for every location, I think this will be a great add on to a child reading this book. This book for younger readers introduces children to 100 weird-but-true places on earth — a wonderful and thrilling journey! Inspiring equal parts wonder and wanderlust, Atlas Obscura celebrates over 600 of the most curious and unusual destinations around the globe. It's not a complete list, of course—even leaving aside the physical limitations of the printed page, not to mention the subjective nature of what counts as obscure—but editors Joshua Foer, Ella Morton and Dylan Thuras have made sure it's a comprehensive one. Mind-boggling events, like the Baby-Jumping Festival in Spain-and no, it's not the babies doing the jumping, but masked men dressed as devils who vault over rows of squirming infants.

Can you imagine living in Mongolia and having someone bring a library to you on the back of a camel? is another wunderkammer—this one focused on real medical oddities—that will leave you, as they say, "disturbingly informed. It is a collaborative project with founders Joshua Foer and Dylan Thuras, along with their community of explorers who help discover hidden spots to share with the world. Talk about a bucket list: here are natural wonders the dazzling glowworm caves in New Zealand, or a baobob tree in South Africa that's so large it has a pub inside where 15 people can drink comfortably. The second edition of “Atlas Obscura” is a gift so enthralling that it may draw the recipient into a kind of extended trance.das die Bilder die ganze Seite einnehmen hat das Lesen nochmal schöner gestaltet, ich muss aber gestehen, dass ich die Bilder manchmal nicht ganz so schön fand. It is one of those books that you can just curl up and go through page by page or just pick one at random and enjoy. Moonwalking with Einstein describes Foer's journey as a participatory journalist to becoming a national champion mnemonist, under the tutelage of British Grand_Master_of_Memory, Ed Cooke. I been very fortunate and have visited well over 70 countries; but have visited 1, just 1, of the places covered by the book. Peer over a 355-foot waterfall in Zambia, then learn how Antarctica’s Blood Falls got their mysterious color.

I first came across it in an issue of mental_floss and was lucky enough to score a copy for Christmas. I’m not sure whether I’d actually enjoy spaghetti flavoured ice cream, but I’d love to be able to say I tried it. And if you were an author looking for inspiration for a setting, this book would be the place to start. The entries are all short and often accompanied by pictures, making it perfect to read a small part at a time. The text, beautifully written by Dylan Thuras and Rosemary Mosco unfurls your imagination over 100 pages of quirky, curious places and facts hidden in the nooks and crannies of our amazing planet. Its also the kind of book that inspires awesome conversations and really gets your motor running to learn more about the smaller, less newsworthy places of the world where extraordinary wonder and darkness still exist.

Many of the landmarks in Atlas Obscura are significantly less accessible—even if you're a wealthy and seasoned world traveler, even if you happen to be in the same country (or even on the same continent) they're in, or near. Even though the internet age has brought us 24 access to all things wondrous and strange, it's sometimes difficult to find things unless you know exactly what you're looking for.a wonderful browse [for] armchair travelers who enjoyed Brandon Stanton's Humans of New York and Frank Warren's PostSecret. I skipped ahead to the bit about California and read something about the city of Guadalupe being in the Colorado Desert.
