About this deal

However, there is an exception to this. This s the catch-up rule. If a team is trailing and scores four points and is still trailing after four points get the chance to play the active team again. So, a team who is even trailing 0-9 can still win if they hit four trails three times in a row. End of the game Wavelengthis a social guessing game in which two teams compete to read each other's minds. Teams take turns rotating a dial to where they think a hidden bullseye is located on a spectrum. One of the players on your team — the Psychic — knows exactly where the bullseye is, and draws a card with a pair of binaries on it (such as: Job - Career, Rough - Smooth, Fantasy - Sci-Fi, Sad Song - Happy Song, etc). The Psychic must then provide a clue that is *conceptually* where the bullseye is located between those two binaries. The worst part of playing a modern board game is “the teach” — that interminable period of time when you first sit down to share something unusual with a new group of people. Very rarely comes a game that literally has no “teach” moment, where you can just sit down and run through the opening few rounds and things just sorta make sense. Lacuna, the latest offering from CMYK, is just that sort of magical offering: a chill game, built for good vibes, that requires almost no explanation.

We tend to just let the Psychic give a new clue with a new card and target location, but we're generous that way. Once both teams have finalized their guess, the Psychic reveals the location of the target by opening the screen. It’s as simple as that. The novelty of the game, however, comes from the diversity in the word cards. Some are straightforward, fairly obvious, unambiguous (such as dark/light). However, some are possibly more subjective, such as sport/game or smells good/smells bad. More than anything, though, it was just nice to have something bright and colorful and easy to learn after a long day out on the trail. Lacuna was one of the highlights of our first big family trip of the summer, and it’s earned a place in our car camping totes — likely for all time. Lacuna could easily become a fun new tradition for your family as well. For example, if the card this round is HOT-COLD and the bullseye is closer to the "cold" side of the centre, the Psychic needs to give a clue somewhere in that region. Maybe "salad"?Scores the number of points printed on the wedge that the dial is in. Below, the team scores 3 points. Other Team While discussing, the players on the Psychic’s team can turn the dial to better illustrate what they think. Players can discuss for as long as they want. When all of the players agree to the positioning of the dial, they will tell the other team that they are done. After this point the dial cannot be turned anymore. The Psychic’s teammates are analyzing the clue “football” that was given to them. The teammates debate whether it is more round or pointy before choosing where they want to place the dial. Left/Right Phase The team that goes first starts at O points. The team that goes second starts at 1 point. We call the teams Left Brain and Right Brain, but you can call yourselves anything you like. Oh, and we mentioned that it takes 30 seconds to set up. The dial is one single piece that you just slot in and out of the the box's plastic base to hold it upright. Then you draw a card. That's the entirety of setting it up.

Place one head into the slot on the left side that doesn’t have a number next to it. You will place the other head on the right side in the same slot. The other team scores 1 point if they correctly guessed whether the target is to the left or right of the final dial position. If the Psychic's team guessed perfectly (the 4 point wedge), the other team cannot score. Discussion is eventually wrapped as opinions are settled and everyone holds their breath. The panel covering the wheel is opened in a moment of dramatic tension. One player from the active team-the Psychic-knows where the target is, but can only give a clue ON THE SPECTRUM between two opposing concepts. After that, their team- mates have to guess where the target is. Each team takes their turn in rotating a dial on the wheel with the aim of hitting the target on the wheel behind the screen.

C. Left/right Phase

Wavelength is a straightforward game to play. Players are assigned to two teams. One player on one of the teams is presented with a card, on which two dichotomous extremes are written, e.g. dark – light. The “active” player is shown a randomised position on a sliding dial – let’s imagine that the position is near, but not at the very end of, the “dark” end of the scale. They have to come up with a word which matches that position on the scale – they may choose “twilight”, or “Deadpool”. The rest of the team then have to guess where on the scale they think that word belongs. For example, if I am giving a clue using the word an old coin. Using the adjective extremely to qualify the clue is giving away too much. Benefits of playing the wavelength board game After you have given the clue, you will close the screen so none of the other players can see the target area on the spectrum. You will then turn the device so your teammates can see it. At this point the Psychic cannot communicate at all until both teams have submitted their guess for the round. If the Psychic gives any other information after this point, the players need to decide what the punishment should be. The game recommends that the Psychic draw a new card and redo the whole Psychic Phase. Giving Clues
