About this deal

As I mentioned, the AD400 Pro essentially offers the same features as the AD600 Pro with the new firmware, but with a little less power. One of the features recently added to the AD600 Pro in this firmware was 1/10th stop adjustment options. Godox is also releasing their own range of modifiers to fit directly to the unit. However, as a shooter who already uses Godox lights, I have several Bowens mount modifiers so I find myself using the Bowens mount adapter almost every time. Equipped with accurate and reliable TTL mode, this unit can be successfully used when lighting conditions are changing rapidly. The built-inSystem X receiver allows full wireless control and triggering up to 100m. High-Speed Sync is also available (up to 1/8000s). AD400Pro TTL stands out for it's high colour consistency throughout the entire power output range. When high colour accuracy is needed, the photographer can activate a specially designed Color Priority Mode. In this way, whatever power output is set, the flash can be triggered with the highest possible accuracy. White balance fluctuations in this mode will not exceed +/-75K. In standard mode white balance is rated as 5600 +/-200K.

Some folks are reporting that you have to remove the batteries from speedlights or transmitter before attaching them to USB to get the firmware updater to recognize it.Do you see any other advantages (or disadvantages) especially if one compares the AD200 Pro to the AD400 Pro? The 100Ws of power is suitable to fill a softbox and so can be used with a range of modifiers and still produce an excellent effect within your work. The AD400 Pro sizes in at 220mm and weighs only 2.1kg! This makes the AD400 Pro, whilst much more powerful, only slightly bigger and heavier than the extremely compact AD200 Pro. With this flash, you are getting a very powerful lighting solution in a compact and lightweight body!

The Profoto B10 battery is significantly smaller, but it actually holds a larger capacity and is capable of producing 400 flashes at full power, while the AD400's battery can only fire 390. The Power Test Godox has confirmed to me that tenth stop adjustments will remain a “Pro” model only feature, so it will not be coming to the AD200, AD360II nor the Godox range of speedlights. Of course, they hadn’t told us about the new round head speedlight then. Godox hasn’t said yet whether or not that one will offer 1/10th stop adjustments. It also comes with a set of screws and an allen key for fixing the included Bowens Mount adapter ring to the unit. Make sure you're using the correct cable and port for firmware updating the device. This is not as easy as it sounds for the AD Witstro lights, which often come equipped with two different types of USB ports. Also available is the Si smart reader option which provides the added capability to read the secure application area on HID® smart and NFC mobile credentials.

Some signals only available with an RS-485 connection. Consult the AD-400 data sheet and your access control software provider for specific scope of support. AD400Pro TTLis equipped with Godox type light modifier mount. However it is supplied together with a Bowens mount adapter so it can be used with a wide assortment of softboxes, reflectors, beauty dishes, snoots, umbrellas etc. made by Quadralite, Godox or by other manufacturers.

I do enjoy the use of the modeling light on the AD-B2. However, you will not be able to see it effectively when shooting in bright conditions. Indoors and late afternoon light work though. You will not be bale to see how the light is at the actual power you may need to shoot at, but it will give you an idea of how it is going to fall across the subject.

For the second test, we wanted to see if the color temperature changed as we went from full power to the lowest power. Once again, both units showed pretty constant white balance color, even though the exposure varied a bit between each setting (as mentioned above, one stop down doesn't always equal one full stop output). As you can see in the animation above, we did find a lot of color variation with the Profoto B10 when the unit was placed in Freeze mode. This mode allows those lightning-fast flash durations, but at the expense of accurate color. You can clearly see the flash gets bluer as you lower the power setting, but retains pretty accurate color balance from full power down to about 1/16th power. The Godox flash did not experience any major shift in color regardless of the color mode it was set to. The Profoto might be slightly more accurate in color mode, but you might actually prefer getting the more accurate color and shorter flash duration of the Godox in freeze mode. The main differences are that the AD600Pro does not have the option for interchangeable adapter rings for Bowens, Profoto and Elinchrom, and obviously there’s the 200-watt power output difference between the two flash heads.
