About this deal

Later she is involved in the events concerning Larry LaSalle, who taught her dancing in the 'Wreck Centre'. Now, so many years later, as I listened to one of his books that I hadn't had the pleasure of reading way back then, it's so amazing to identify a lot of my own style in his writing. Remember when I said Francis almost sacrificed his life, fell onto a grenade, and tried to “shield” his comrades from a grenade explosion? This is another one of those books which my son brought home from school, apparently it is part of his GCSE English curriculum.

Larry was the first young man of Monument to enlist in the armed forces, leaving the Wreck Center closed in the wake of his departure. Only later in life, when my journey had come full circle and I realized I was meant to become what I enjoyed the most, a storyteller, did it occur to me how much of an impact Robert Cormier had had on me. Whilst at school he met Nicole Renard and instantly fell in love with her, and continues to be so until at the end of the book. I absolutely recommend this book to young adults because it “will” really help them understand the true reason of life. Join now to access our Study Guides library, which offers chapter-by-chapter summaries and comprehensive analysis on more than 5,000 literary works from novels to nonfiction to poetry. There is however something that Larry tries to hide from them all, but in his weakness fails to control himself, and here the dark theme and his morality is eventually revealed. The ending is a bit ambiguous but considering it’s written by Robert Cormier, I took the more pessimistic interpretation to probably be the right one. As I mentioned above, when I first read this novella, I was expecting great things, and ultimately didn't think that I received them. The story moves back to before the war when Larry Lasalle arrives in Frenchtown and is loved by everyone.

I recommend this book to anyone who desires to read it but especially students who are studying the book. Although no doubt a brave act but in doing so he also saves his own life and as such could be equally regarded as a simple act of self-preservation. LaSalle is using his own abilities to help others develop their own, and teaches young Francis to play table tennis. Hailed as a hero and inching ever closer to his childhood sweetheart, Francis seemed to be living in a perfect world, but the attack on Pearl Harbor and the subsequent entry of the United States into WWII changed everything. However, his luck began to change with the arrival of Larry and the opening of the town’s new recreation center, which was dubbed the “ Wreck Center” due to its shoddy refurbishment and its bloody history as the site of a wedding that turned into a mass shooting.Oh, I have eyes… but no ears to speak of… was an important quote because it shows the description of the main character, Francis because it explained his life and how he looks like. As Francis helps him, Arthur begins to pour out his emotions, lamenting that nobody wants to talk about the horrible truth of what happened during the war, and exclaiming that the war wasn’t a stage for glamorous, heroic soldiers, but merely a group of terrified children caught up in a violent struggle for survival. This novel portrays the dilemma of taking justice into your own hands or showing mercy to someone who also happens to have a huge influence on your life but committed such an immoral act. He hopes to rekindle his relationship with her but she rebuffs him, claiming that she can never forget his betrayal at the Wreck Center. Now, having survived, he is looking for a man he once admired and respected, a man adored by many people, a man who also received a Silver Star for bravery.

Through a series of flashbacks, Francis slowly reveals his story: how hew grow up in Monument as a shy, uncertain boy, until he met LaSalle - a dedicated director of the town's recreation center. A quiet man who worked at the Monument Comb factory, he was always affectionate towards Francis but moved back to Canada during the war. Francis does anything to be with her but she's not ready to be with him so she goes back to Albany , New York and study and become a teacher of english. I used to adore YA books, with cliché romance plots and heartwarming love stories to more sort of philosophical books, which most of the stories took part in 20th century america. I could argue that the book was anti-climatic but I wasn't disappointed when Francis wouldn't shoot Larry. The quotes are lovely, and sometimes heartbreaking, but all of them memorable, which is the critical thing when you need them for an exam. He decided against jumping off the chapel top, and instead lied into the army and some time in the war threw himself on top of a grenade. Each individual story is paced nicely, and all three intertwine, all the pieces coming together to form the picture that is Francis' life. An extremely well paced and tightly written narrative which is cleverly set in the 1930s and 1040s, but which retains a timeless element. As Francis leaves, he hears the sound of gunshots coming from Larry’s building, indicating that Larry has committed suicide.
