About this deal

Any risks that may be associated with nicotine replacement therapy are substantially outweighed by the well-established dangers of continued smoking. If there is a clinically significant increase in cardiovascular or other effects attributable to nicotine, the nicotine gum dose should be reduced or discontinued.

The above recommendation can be used for adolescents aged between 12 and 17 years of age. As data are limited in this age group, medical advice should be obtained should it be found necessary to use the gum beyond 12 weeks. The use of NRT in adolescents should only be used when the benefits of abstinence outweigh the risks of continued smoking. Nicotine gum should preferably be used in conjunction with a behavioural support programme as this normally improves the success rate.

Indications

You may have tried to stop smoking before and you know from bitter experience that it’s not easy to give up cigarettes.

Concomitant use of acidic beverages such as coffee or soda may decrease the buccal absorption of nicotine. Acidic beverages should be avoided for 15 minutes prior to chewing the gum. The overriding success factor in quitting is how determined you are. The first few weeks of quitting or reducing the number of cigarettes you smoke will probably be the most difficult because your smoking ritual is still fresh in your mind. Hypersensitivity, angioedema, urticaria, ulcerative stomatitis, angioneurotic oedema and very rare anaphylactic reactions. Excessive swallowing of nicotine which is released in the saliva may, at first, cause hiccups. Those who are prone to indigestion may suffer initially from minor degrees of dyspepsia or heartburn; slower chewing will usually overcome this problem. As you chew, the gum releases nicotine to help ease your physical cravings and reduce your desire to smoke. To get maximum effectiveness from Nicotinell Gum, it's critical you follow a 'chew and park' method for at least 30 minutes. Chewing the gum for a couple of minutes only without parking it, doesn't allow the gum to help provide relief from cravings. Nicotinell gums can cause adverse reactions similar to those associated with nicotine administered by other means (including smoking) These can be attributed to the pharmacological effects of nicotine, which are dose dependant. Non dose-dependent adverse reactions are as follows: When you have cut down the number of cigarettes you smoke to a level you feel you can quit completely, follow Program A above. If an adverse event is noted when high dose forms are initiated, this should be replaced by the lower dosage form.

Nicotinell 2mg gum contains less than 1 mmol sodium (23 mg) per chewing gum, that is to say essentially 'sodium-free'. These events may also be due to withdrawal symptoms following smoking cessation. The patient may still experience nicotine dependence after smoking cessation. Whenever you feel the urge to smoke coming on, distract yourself by keeping active. Don’t feel sorry for yourself. Get up and do something. Do that job around the house or garden that you’ve been putting off or take up a hobby. Nicotinell Fruit flavoured gum provides an effective aid to combat the unpleasant withdrawal symptoms caused by giving up smoking. Nicotinell 2mg gum is particularly useful for moderate smokers experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms. For a number of years you will have become accustomed to smoking at certain times, with particular people or in certain situations. Think about the times you will miss smoking the most and plan how you will cope on these occasions. Swallowed nicotine may exacerbate symptoms in patients suffering from active oesophagitis, oral or pharyngeal inflammation, gastritis, or peptic ulcers and oral nicotine replacement therapy preparations should be used with caution in these conditions. Ulcerative stomatitis has been reported. Children or adults who have accidentally ingested less than 0.2 mg/kg nicotine and who have no new symptoms since the time of ingestion do not need to be referred for medical assessment. Patients should be advised to seek medical attention if symptoms develop. The benefits of gastric decontamination are uncertain. Consider activated charcoal (50g adults: 1g/kg children) provided airway can be protected in those presenting within 1 hour of ingestion of more than 0.2mg/kg of nicotine. The chewing action also works to distract you from your desire to smoke, giving your mouth something else to do (other than smoking).
