About this deal

About the brand: Mario Badescu is an American skincare brand known for its innovative approach to acne and skincare products. Established by the facialist himself in 1967, the line was initially designed to complement his renowned NYC services, and now is a widely popular and accessible brand available at most beauty retailers. About My Skin: Balanced, but can break out In terms of other ingredients, there’s sage leaf and chamomile to mitigate potential irritation. The only real gripe I have is the fragrance. Where possible, I try to avoid heavily scented products as they can be sensitizing for me. This cleanser does have a strong smell I could probably do without, but so far, I have no issues to report. Again, this may require some research into the product to determine, but Idriss says you ideally want a glycolic acid with a pH of 4 or less. Corrie H. in Massachusetts has been using this product as her exfoliant. She says, “I received some samples of this cleanser when I first started using MB and I fell in love with it. I have combo/dry/sensitive skin prone to hormonal breakouts. This cleanser makes my skin feel so clean, refreshed, and soft without overdyring it and it foams up beautifully. I use it several times a week and I love the results I have gotten” DO NOT use this as a daily cleanser. Replace your regular cleanser 1-3 times a week (1-2 times for Dry to Combination skin and 2-3 times for Combination and Oily skin) to break down impurities and refine pores.

After two weeks of consistent use, I'm pleasantly surprised with just how much of a difference this product made. My face definitely feels smoother and a tiny bit more radiant and even, likely due to the gentle exfoliation. While I wouldn't say it's overly stripping, it did leave my skin a little tight, so I was sure to follow up with a hydrating serum each time.

What it is

I’ve always leaned on chemical exfoliants to keep my skin as clear and even as possible, but I always err on the side of caution (no one wants a red, itchy, sensitive face). That’s why an exfoliating cleanser is a nice middle ground—they’re not as intense as a leave-on formula.

Glycolic acid cleansers come in three main textures: cream, gel or foaming. Foaming cleansers are generally better suited to oily skin types and are great at cleaning deep into the pores. They often contain an ingredient called sodium lauryl sulfate, however, which can be irritating to more sensitive skin types. Glycolic acid increases cell turnover in the skin so it’s often combined with soothing and hydrating ingredients to help it be best tolerated by the skin. Glycerin and hyaluronic acid are both known for their water-binding properties, so the HA pairs well with glycolic acid, as does urea and aloe. It won’t come as a surprise that the heavy-hitting ingredient here is glycolic acid. Glycolic acid is part of the alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) family, which is known to slough off surface cells, leaving the complexion smooth and even. AHAs don't dissolve oil, so they won't clear out clogged pores—try something with a BHA if that's what you are looking for. But they will remove the dead skin that contributes to congestion. A glycolic acid cleanser can be used every day as long as it doesn’t contain a very high percentage of acid and it’s not active in its state—so you don’t put an acid directly onto the skin,” advises Dr Unnati DessaI, an aesthetic doctor, dermatologist and Medical Director at London's Skinfluencer clinic. “Products that have an acid microencapsulated into them are much more skin friendly and less likely to cause irritation. A daily use of glycolic acid is actually recommended, if you can tolerate it. It's actually very good for most skin types”.My complexion is generally pretty balanced, but it can have diva-like tendencies when I’m not looking after it. Things like shine, breakouts, and uneven tone are what I’m usually trying to correct via skincare—those and the occasional bout of dehydration.
