About this deal

Peaberry coffee beans are typically smaller, rounder, and denser than regular coffee beans. As such, they tend to require a slightly different approach to roasting. Dark roasts. Dark roast coffees tend to be less acidic because they contain fewer compounds that cause stomach cells to produce acid. Not to be confused with a variety, it is characterised by its round, almost spherical shape, and is typically smaller, denser than “normal” beans from the same tree. As we’ve discovered, Tanzanian peaberry coffee is simply a mutation of the coffee cherry. And it’s a mutation that happens all over the world. Coffee farms in Tanzania are all in highland regions, where the altitude, pleasant climate, even rainfall and fertile soils combine to create an ideal environment for a coffee plantation and for cultivating high-quality coffee. About three-quarters of the crop is Arabica coffee beans, the rest being Robusta, particularly in the Kagera area. Some species of wild coffee have been found, such as Coffea Kihansiensis in the Udzungwa Mountains. The chief growing regions, apart from Mt Kilimanjaro, are Arusha, Bukoba, Morogoro, Ngara and the Usambara Mountains. It is fairly common to see coffee plants growing on farms among banana trees whose leaves help to shade them from the sun's intense heat. This shade growing reduces the temperature but increases the humidity around the plants, so the coffee cherries mature and ripen more slowly: this gives Tanzanian coffee a delicious aroma and sweeter, full-bodied flavour.

Tanzanian Arusha is a market name for the Arusha varietal coffee plant grown on the hills of Mt. Meru as well as Mt. Kilimanjaro. The Arusha varietal is an Arabica coffee varietals that is either a Typica or French Mission variety. Farming Many people would love it if peaberry coffee beans could be guaranteed in a crop as they fetch a higher price and are widely considered amongst the world’s best coffee beans. However, whilst many prefer the sweeter taste, there are plenty of non-believers who say there is no difference in flavor. Therefore, when you see “peaberry” indicated on a bag of coffee, it means that the farmer has specifically separated the smaller beans from the regular flat beans to produce a bag consisting entirely of peaberry coffee. However, a more reasonable explanation is that there are certainly some differences in taste between the two and it’s a matter of personal preference as to which one is better. Specialty coffee suppliers tend to market pure peaberry coffee at a premium. There’s a lot of hot debate as to whether Peaberry coffee is objectively better than regular coffee. A lot of it is just marketing, though there is some truth behind it all. A single bean is able to develop flavours more fully, being given the nutrients of two beans instead of one, and the more uniform size allows for better flavor development during roasting. Gesha coffee is known to have some of the highest cup scores in the world. This washed Gesha from Junín in Peru won 6th place in the 2022 Peru Cup of Excellence, with a score of 89.46. It is milky and smooth, bright in acidity, has a creamy body and a sweet and delicate finish.

Until recently, Peaberries were thrown out of Kona coffee lots because they were viewed as inferior. Due to their odd shape and size, they would roast differently if left in and thus reduce the overall quality and consistency of the rest of the batch. Now the sorted beans are being sold separately at a premium due to their rarity and the sorting process. So where’s the truth between these extremes? The second theory is that the shape and density of peaberry coffees lend themselves to better roasting, leading to tastier flavor development. The idea is that because peaberries are more round and even in shape, heat travels throughout the bean at a more consistent rate and allows for even roasting. Yet while every farm has the potential to produce peaberry beans, not all go to the effort to separate these seeds from the rest of the harvest. Tanzanian coffee possesses an intense and vibrant sourness akin to the Kenyan coffee grown in neighboring Kenya. However, Tanzanian coffee has a creamy, smooth and buttery body and leaves a long-lasting taste. The Tanzania Peaberry coffee seeds are two times as vibrant and have more refined flavors – you can anticipate getting more prominent fruity notes and traces of cedar.

Where does the most expensive coffee in the world come from?

This is for a number of reasons, but perhaps most notable was the arrival of coffee wilt disease in 1997. This disease (which affects both arabica and robusta plants) is caused by the tracheomycosis fungus, and results in the irreversible death of the coffee plant. On the flip-side to Japan, there is another camp of people who believe peaberry coffee possesses superior flavor over regular coffee beans. The theory here is that with peaberries, all of the goodness that is usually spread over two beans is now compacted into one single magical seed. More of the good stuff makes for a more potent bean…in theory.

Although the Tanzanian peaberry coffee has a chocolatey and almost tobacco-like aroma, the flavor only has tiny notes of sweetness and chocolate. How to Roast Tanzania Peaberry Coffee? There are a few things that come as a result of this sorting process. First, 100% peaberry blends do in fact have a slightly different flavor profile than even the beans from the same tree. (More on that later). Secondly, and more importantly, this is the extra labor that ends up hiking up the cost of the beans in the long run. There are some varietals and origins that see peaberries more frequently, but these cherries will pop-up regardless of where they are grown or from which tree they grew.
