About this deal

You might think that it’s as easy as finding a comparison chart to convert metric to imperial or vice versa. In truth, the two measurements aren’t comparable. This is because imperial is measured in inches and there’s very little crossover between imperial measurements and standard metric ones. Metric spanners are fairly straightforward to understand in that the size given on the spanner, say 13mm, refers to the distance in millimetres across the flat-sided surfaces of a nut or bolt head. The same is true of Imperial “AF”, found on American classics and UK cars built after 1960. AF is short for “across the flats” and again, it’s a literal measurement so if the spanner is marked 1/2 then it means the distance across the flats of the nut or bolt it fits is 1/2 an inch. The Whitworth 55° angle remains commonly used today worldwide in form of the 15 British standard pipe threads defined in ISO 7, which are commonly used in water supply, cooling, pneumatics, and hydraulic systems. These threads are designated by a number between 1/16 and 6 that originates from the nominal internal diameter (i/d) in inches of a steel pipe for which these threads were designed. These pipe thread designations do not refer to any thread diameter. When you see a spanner marked AF, it stands for Across Flats but is actually an Imperial size inscription or more specifically an SAE marking which is associated with UNF and UNC screw threads. For instance, a 1/2 inch AF spanner means it is a ½ inch across and can fit in a 5/17 inch UNF nut’s diameter. Ring spanner – It is very much like the open-ended spanned but the U-shaped are closed this time to prevent the bolt or nut from slipping. The enclosure also puts a limit on the type of the bolts and nuts that can be opened by the spanner. They are doubled ended as well but and the two holes have two different size configurations.

What this means in terms of hand tools is that there’s no exact equivalent for a 9/16” spanner in metric units. So, if you’re working on something that requires a metric tool, then you can’t just swap an imperial tool in and hope for the best. You need to go metric to get the required accuracy and avoid any potential damage. 2. What you need depends on what you’re working on Some vehicles use a mixture of bolt systems by design. Land Rovers and some other old designs are known for this. Until 1955 Morris and MG used metric threaded bolts with their heads made to fit Whitworth sizes.Whitworth fasteners with the larger hexagons to BS 190 are now often colloquially referred to as 'pre-war' size, even though that is not strictly correct. A top performer in previous spanner set tests, Sealey just misses out on a podium position this time. The set gets a lot of things right, with the range starting at 6mm and rising to 22mm, all contained in an EVA (ethylene and vinyl acetate) foam tray for tool cabinets. For the British Association (BA) configured threads, as often used on old electrical equipment, the inscribed/marked size is also the head size. For example, a 2BA spanner can comfortably fit on a 2BA nut. With the adoption of BSW by British railway companies, many of which had previously used their own standards both for threads and for bolt head and nut profiles, and the growing need generally for standardisation in manufacturing specifications, it came to dominate British manufacturing. data of satta results and gali disawar diagrams as the are open for public and refreshed.
