About this deal

And if you stall mid-game due to dice fails and impassable rooms, you fall behind losing many “firsties” gem contests with creature kills. I’d kind of prefer that you be able to stay in the game, but I’ll freely admit that there’s not much else for you to do if you do get to the point of running out of health. But, as with most of these RAW games, scoring is better when things are crossed off first, so you’ll always be choosing between rushing for certain things versus playing it safe and leaving yourself options.

It is here that players who take further damage will also start gaining increasingly more negative points. Rooms you explore and cross out must already be adjacent to previously explored, previously scratched-out rooms. So really you are still making 2 marks – but man, you really don’t want to put marks on your life meter). Players may also gain three more black dice, or a torch, or +3 health when they cross off a space on their map with a treasure chest.I don’t love the player elimination, though you’re not exactly out; you just can’t score any more points (or play more). As you do, players will use dice to determine which rooms they explore and which monsters they fight. D is for Dice (Mitigation): The game can be cruel when the dice turn against you but there are ways to steer your fate. It’s generally good to know what your opponents are going after, but if you get a sense of what they’re ignoring, you might be able to sneak around and nab some early Monsters for yourself.

The rule benefiting everyone when someone defeats a monster for the first time is a help, but wasn’t enough to offset the leader’s head start. Many of the bosses are only vulnerable after you’ve crossed out activating spaces, so these can be key to winning. The one rule that I have consistently seen missed is the rule about getting a free hit on a monster whenever someone defeats it for the first time.Certain turns take a while, granted, and the game itself takes a good amount of time to play, but I never feel like the game is dragging. If you have crossed off an adjacent grey room, you can fill in the number in the monster’s room – this is now a valid number to hit the monster as well! If a player is not able to cross out two boxes (combination of dungeon spaces and dealing damage to a monster) then they lose a life point.

Even if you don’t deal the final blow to the Boss, you want to do as much damage as you can to it to keep up with the leader. For some people, they go straight for the monsters and pick up points in bunches for defeating them, hopefully getting the larger scores for being the first to vanquish a particular monster. Try eyeballing your opponents’ sheets; you can often see which Monsters aren’t getting much play and go after them, if you want. Three times during the game you may use the (fifth) black die on your turn to make dice pairs – even if you aren’t the Active Player. It probably won’t happen much, but I’m not wild about the player elimination if you run out of health. I love the variety of places to explore, and I think that these dungeon crawlers focusing on exploration makes them more fun, for me, since I don’t really love combat. However, this randomness is spread across all players as everyone has to deal with the same dice roll. My biggest problem with it is that once someone gets a few rolls their way, it’s hard for anyone to catch up to them. Quality You Can Trust – Ravensburger has been making quality games for the head, hand, and heart for over 130 years.

What You Get – Each game comes with 200 Adventure sheets, 5 Dice, 4 Pencils, and rules in English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish. Compare those with the Expert dungeon Defiant Dinosaurs, where players must face armored dinosaurs that they have to deal 2 damage to or none gets through, and the activating spaces are replaced with claw spaces that unlock damage opportunities all over the board. One gives you a gem and some extra Life Points, another lets you cross off any two spaces of your choice, and the third lets you use the Black Die another three times. I also find it interesting how each player’s map will look different and have taken very different paths despite using the same dice. Play will continue this way with the active player rolling the dice and all players making their numbered pairs until every monster has been defeated by at least one player.Scoring is pretty granular, you only score in 2s or 3s – but how you get the points can differ greatly from board to board. It adds some decision making into your pairing and there is a nice race element to defeating the monsters. D is for Dice: The goal is to cross out elements in your dungeon based on the dice rolled and shared by all players.
