Describing many of their own discoveries, two of the world's leading experts in Maya hieroglyphs take the reader into a once-hidden history, setting out the latest thinking on the nature of Maya divine kingship, statehood and political authority, and describing all the most recent readings and archaeological finds. As the survivors left for better lives elsewhere, the lowland Maya kingdoms were abandoned and their “Lords of Time” disappeared forever. However, having two successive Maya kings with the same name on the throne would have run contrary to the established practice of changing regnal names: the direct heir to the throne never repeated the name of their predecessor in the history of Yaxchilan and Piedras Negras.
Several factors contributed to these changes, including environmental problems, population movements, and shifting trade routes. Soon thereafter the Kaan kings moved to a new seat of power at Calakmul, located closer to their defeated foe. The dynastic line of Tikal, founded as early as the 1st century AD, spanned 800 years and included at least 33 rulers. g., Fash and López Luján 2009;Marken and Fitzsimmons 2015; Martin and Grube 2008;Tokovinine 2013;Walden et al.
