Mice and Mystics has a very charming theme, especially if you grew up loving Brian Jacques books, Watership Down , and The Secret of NIMH . I enjoyed the different mice (each of which fills a different role in the party) and like that you can customize them with ability cards.

More importantly, though, combat feels very repetitive—even with different enemies, the "gameplay" parts of Mice and Mystics feel samey, and I find myself itching to get to the next part of the story. If all of the mice are captured at the same time, or time runs out, then they were stopped without being able to accomplish their mission - thus dooming the kingdom! There are also some minor logic problems, in my opinion, but if I go into detail, I'm concerned that I might spoil part of the story for you.

Slow - Choose a minion card, all figures of that card cannot move or attack until this mouse's next turn. Encounter cards are used to determine what kinds of minions the mice will find when they enter a new area. While I have been mainly hitting the solo games hard in lockdown, being able to play a game socially and face to face over webcam has provided a much needed connection with each other and the outside world.

Each mouse has its own unique stats and power, and players will also start out with their own ability cards. We've been interested in Mice and Mystics but also just got Descent: Journeys in the Dark 2nd Edition for Christmas and the boys have loved it - playing constantly. I feel like I spent most of my time fighting the same rats and roaches and it would have been nice to get a bit more variation. Regardless, the net effect of this rule is that most turns amount to charging at opponents and attacking. Perhaps it’s the influence of streaming services like Netflix and Prime, but designers seem keen to bring some of that grand narrative experience to the game table, unfolding plot and twists over multiple gaming sessions.The next time you reveal an encounter card, place all non-ranged figures on that card in spaces adjacent to the mice. While on the Meeps marker, that minion rolls 1 less die when defending against an attack from any mouse. While I have less experience playing RPGs as some of my fellow BRB crew members (check out Michael’s articles for more educated RPG thoughts), I thought the game was perfect for me. As free actions, you are also allowed to level up, equip your mouse, or share equipment with other mice on the same space.

You might appreciate the books if you liked the show, but yeah it ends with the advent of war so anything further would be completely made up.I was really surprised how the game would shift from feeling like we were doing terribly to being on top of the cheese. For those who prefer to rush in and hate putting success down to luck then Mice and Mystics is a tale you should maybe leave on the bookcase.
