proclaiming it "a compendium of folk horror", which may then beg the next obvious question as to what exactly "folk horror" is. In that ANCHORESS director Chris Newby documents the location of the real Christine Carpenter’s anchoress cell at St. James’ Church in Shere, England. Also housed within the case is a companion book that contains an introduction by Janisse, essays and history on the genre, as well as information about each film included in the set. Like the film, it's very well organized, illustrated, and features beautiful typography. It's a premium little book. Based on the short story by early 20th century fantasy writer Lord Dunsany, The Pledge concerns a group of highwaymen who make a pact to save the soul of their hanged partner. A dark, luscious film co-edited by an uncredited Peter Greenaway and featuring music by Michael Nyman. Courtesy of the British Film Institute.

Severin Films (Blu-ray) (US R0 HD), KinoPolska (DVD) (Poland R0 PAL) LOKIS: A MANUSCRIPT OF PROFESSOR WITTEMBACH A newly-commissioned video essay written and narrated by film historian Tim Lucas and edited by filmmaker and programmer Chris O’Neill This early student film from the director of TILBURY transposes the ghostly Icelandic legend of The Deacon of Dark River to 1970s France. Meanwhile, a young man named Strahinja (Petar Bozovic) hopes to wed his girlfriend, Radojka (Mirjana Nikolic) but when he asks her guardian, Zivan (Slobodan 'Cica' Perovic), for permission, he is denied because he is a pauper. When the hard drinking village elders and the local priest find out about his predicament, they offer him a job at the mill, which he accepts, though they fail to disclose to Strahinja the current details regarding the mill's new resident. When all of this stress starts to manifest in a series of unsettling dreams that plague him with depictions of arcane rituals and sinister demons, Stephen starts to lose his grip on his own sanity.

PENDA'S FEN: Audio Commentary With James Machin And Matthew Harle, Editors Of The Book Of Mud & Flame: The Penda’s Fen Sourcebook Outtake: What is Folk Horror? is a two minute piece that is an expanded definition of the folk horror idea that was trimmed from the documentary's opening sequence that features some thoughts on the definition from a few of the movie's interviewees.

Starring Anna Cropper, Amanda Walker, Andy Bradford, Julian Holloway, Freda Bamford, Bernard Hepton Severin Films (Blu-ray) (US R0 HD) / WS (1.66:1) (16:9), KinoPolska (DVD) (Poland R0 PAL) / WS (1.66:1) CLEARCUT ALISON'S BIRTHDAY: Extended Interviews From NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD With Producer David Hannay And Cast Members Joanne Samuel And Belinda Giblin Woodlands Dark And Days Bewitched is presented in AVC encoded 1080p high definition and framed at 1.78.1 widescreen with the feature given 43.4GBs of space on the 50GB disc. The video quality of the newly shot footage, which was clearly done on high definition digital video, looks great. It's clean, crisp and as nicely detailed as you'd expect it to be. Understandably, the archival clips vary in quality quite a bit, some look pristine while others less so, it seems to be entirely a matter of available elements. Even the lesser quality clips are more than watchable, however. Really, no problems to report here, it all looks just fine. In the five minute Folk Poetry section, actors Ian Ogilvy and Linda Hayden perform readings of some classic folk poems that plays overtop of some atmospheric Super 8 footage of wood lots, forests, lakes and interesting landscapes.

This isn't a typical horror film, it's as much an unusual character drama as anything else, but it does an interesting, and sometimes subtlety creepy, job of working Stephen's mindsight into Europe's pagan past with some strong visuals and interesting camerawork. It's also worth noting, of course, that Spencer Banks deserves a lot of credit for his very strong performance here, he really brings out a lot of Stephen's humanity with his work in front of the camera. Please Hear Me — The Music of A Field In England is a six minute interview with composer Jim Williams and Ben Wheatley that goes over what went into creating the score for the film, what some of the influences on the score where, and why the music in the movie turned out the way that it did. The priest of said church (Christopher Eccleston, probably best known for his short stint on Doctor Who), doesn't do a particularly good job of hiding his attraction to Christine and he takes it upon himself to suggest that Christine become an Anchoress. The idea here is that Christine would dedicate her life to the church and be literally walled inside a room in the church where she'd have the responsibility of blessing the different members of the congregation through a single window, her only outlet to the world outside. When Christine agrees to this, the priest soon accuses her mother Pauline (Toyay Willcox) of being a witch, causing Christine to break her vows to try and sort things out.During the Civil War in 17th-Century England, a small group of deserters flee from a raging battle and are captured by an alchemist who forces them to help him find a hidden treasure. Crossing a vast mushroom circle, which provides their first meal, the group succumbs to the terrifying energies trapped inside the field.
