Most collectors are aware of how good later Topcons like the RE Super or Super D are, but for anyone whose never considered the earlier models, I feel as thought despite some conditional issues with this one, in good working condition, the Topcon R is as good as those later cameras, and might even be the best looking camera of the bunch.

Today, the Topcon R, RE Super, and it’s variants are highly collectible due to their historical significance, unique appearance, and very high quality. From a usability standpoint, there are those who are divided in their appreciation of the RE Super’s bulbous size and ergonomics, but even for those who have no interest in shooting them, they have earned a valuable position in any collection. There are too many of these “losers” to name, and most of them, it’s true, lost for good reason. They didn’t offer anything special, didn’t advance the field. But there’s one long lost brand that actually was quite fantastic in its day, a company that did much to push camera tech forward, and today we’re talking about their very best camera – it’s the RE Super from Topcon. In 1963, the Topcon R’s successor, the RE Super was released. Building on the success of the RIII Automatic, the RE Super received a redesigned body and an innovative behind the mirror exposure meter. Comparatively, the Topcon RE Super is a better camera, but it also came five years later. For a 1958 SLR though, there is a lot to like on paper, but what is it like to shoot? There is a real sense of calm when I have a camera which functions smoothly.The film advance motion on the RE Super feels like butter.Sometimes, like on a Leica M3, I find myself winding on without film just to feel it.It also creates a sense of eagerness to use it too, knowing the quality of the results I will get.
