The actual recipes were pretty difficult to make for me because of all the ingredients he uses that are common in New Brunswick, Canada. While the recipes range from the simple to the complex, they’re all as full of flavor as Matheson is full of personality. There are many, many tempting recipes (see below) and Home Style Cookery will definitely get plenty of use if you like Matheson’s style (and I really do), but maybe just not everyday. The recipes are more accessible than the first book, but still has enough odd ingredients or new skills to present challenges to the home cook. Killer recipes: I could just list every dish in the book, but stand-outs include molasses bread in an apple juice can; roti; burn your tongue Caesar salad; fingerling potato supreme; oxtail and mirepoix pierogis; green curry beef ribs; Nashville hot halibut sandwich and molasses cookies stuffed with dulce de leche.

That being said, there are a bunch of other recipes, with great pictures that are worth checking out. As students embark on their collegiate adventures, they can now have these recipes as trusted companions in their culinary explorations. Although it would be wrong to say this is the only cookbook you’ll ever need – it doesn’t quite have the same scope as Home Cookery Year for example – at 368 pages, Matheson has packed a lot in and pretty much delivers a dish for every occasion, drawing on a wide range of global culinary influences in the process. Add the vinegar, pickling spice in a spice ball, and sugar and simmer gently until desired tenderness. It comes from tougher times and was usually boiled and served right away, which would make for a dry meal. I found that the recipe easy to follow, but as Matty says at the beginning of his book, all of these take time to prepare. If you're from the Canadian coast or even New England you would probably enjoy some of these recipes.
