The thing about hostas is that there are so many unique varieties that vary widely in shape, size, and color, that it is not a one size fits all approach to putting them in containers. So, when it comes to container planting your hostas, where do you start? I’ve put together a comprehensive list of my top tips for successfully planting your hostas in containers this season. Ready to learn more? Let’s dig in! Start With Soil To grow hosta in containers, use potting mix. White Edge Hosta– This hosta has emerald green leaves with stunning creamy white margins. It grows to be around 15 – 18 inches tall and 12 – 18 inches wide. I remember creating a summer pot one year that featured a large lemon cypress as the thriller. Then below was a large deep purple heuchera and a bright yellow and green ‘Whirlwind’ hosta and some bacopa and ivy spilling out. The hosta was large and made an impact as a filler plant. Alongside the deep purple heuchera and bright green cypress, it really popped.

Baby Booties Hosta– This is a miniscule (for the hosta world) variation that only grows to be 7 inches tall and 12 inches wide. The foliage is a deep rainforest green with cream colored margins. Carnation Aster Flower meadow seeds Calendula Gypsophila Geranium Poppy Lobelia Lupine Petunia Salvia Tagetes Violets All flower seeds When the tips turn brown and dry, you’ll know you have underwatered it. They cant tolerate standing water. The leaves would start to sag and turn yellow if you were to overwater them. Growing white feather Hosta in the ground will require watering once every three days, but only if the soil retains moisture. LightDeer and rabbit are also big pests. Tall pots will deter the rabbits, but deer will happily munch a big pot of hostas. Try spraying a deer deterrent on your container hostas. This is much easier to keep up with in a container setting, rather than an entire garden bed. kept in the ground in our nurseries until fully dormant. In the Fall these plants tend to arrive at the White Feather Hosta is a stunning plant in the shade garden. Pair it with other interesting perennials such as Ostrich Fern, Astilbe, and Japanese Anemone. Pests affecting White Feather hosta When it comes to the size of the container, the choice is yours. Just keep in mind that large pots will need to be watered less often than smaller ones.

Hostas are large-leafed plants. When those leaves get damaged and destroyed it takes a long time for them to flush out new leaves. This depends on the variety, little leaf varieties will produce new leaves faster than those with large leaves. When you notice the lower leaves turning yellow and brown, or if you see any soft, brown, mushy decay, the plant has gotten infected by some fungal disease. I would also mix in some compost, aged manure, or worm castings. I don’t generally fertilize pots with hostas, they don’t need it like flowering annuals do (I will fertilize mixed containers with flowers and hostas). By adding some organic matter, you give them a slow release boost. Maintain a Balanced Watering Schedule Try to keep a balance of soil moisture, as hostas do not like to dry out but also do not like dampness. There are many varieties of begonias and they all love being beside hostas. It’s a match made in heaven. Try large tuberous begonias with them. The big bold flowers really pop against a hostas large green leaves.

Caring for White Feather Hosta

The most common diseases affecting White Feather Hostas are powdery mildew and rust. These diseases are caused by fungi that thrive in humid conditions. Make sure your hostas are getting adequate light. Also, make sure there is adequate airflow between plants. I will remove the soggy and crammed leaves. But if you already have powdery mildew, prevention isn’t on your mind. Use a copper fungicide spray to deal with mildew. Plan to Overwinter One way to overwinter the hosta is to bury it in the ground with a pot. Thankfully hostas are pretty low maintenance. They are not the deadheading nightmare of some fussy container flowers. All they need is any broken or damaged leaves snipped off. You should divide your Hosta every four to five years. The best time for dividing is spring. When the plants are just starting to emerge, dig them up and repot them separately.

There are incredibly few plant species that have a multitude of different varieties the way the hosta does. Hostas can be diminutive, gigantic, or somewhere in the median range and they come in so many amazing color variations. You could fill a large garden with various hosta plants and never use the same variety twice. There are blue hostas and green hostas, multi colored hostas and ones with single color leaves. Here, we are going to take a look at all of the varieties that have white somewhere on their leaves. It is important to note, that any plant that is entirely white is exceedingly rare. For disease, the main one hostas will get is powdery mildew. This is a sign the conditions are too damp. Mildew thrives in dark wet stagnant areas. So to avoid this make sure you are not overwatering. When you do water it is also best to avoid spraying the foliage as much as possible.Allium Amaryllis Anemone Grape hyacinth Eremurus Hyacinten Iris Crocus Lily Gladiolus Dahlia Daffodils Ranunculus Tulips Snowdrops Begonia Calla Hemerocallis All flower bulbs Barriers such as diatomaceous earth or copper tape can also be used to keep these pests away from white feather hostas.
