About this deal

Children’s & Young Adult All to Play For shortlisted for the UKLA Book Award 2023 in the 7-10+ category Everything changes one day when a strange boy washes up on an inflatable lobster and reveals that Uncle Luther has been stealing her inventions and selling them on the mainland. Leonora, armed with her most important inventions, must leave Crabby Island for the first time EVER to embark on an unforgettable journey that will test her brainpower to its limits. Leonora Bolt makes amazing gadgets from any old junk. And her inventions have already stopped villainous Uncle Luther TWICE, though she hasn't rescued her super-scientist parents from him - yet.

A fabulous and fully illustrated rhyming story about a magical kitten and the family who adopt her. Ideal for newly independent readers or as shared reading with younger children. I’m fairly new to reading MG, but have been more than making up for it this year and Leonora Bolt is definitely one of my favourites of 2022! So well written, engaging, inventive and funny. It’s also inspiring to see a girl character with an interest in STEM. The level of peril and tension is just perfect for lower Middle-Grade, although the mad-cap comedy and brilliant inventions will ensure this appeals to older readers too! Leonora is smart, resourceful and very relatable main character - and a tech-y genius, which is always a plus (more Girl-In-STEM please!!) The ending of the book wraps up the main adventure nicely, while leaving threads hanging for a sequel kids will chomping at the bit to read! I've adored this e-ARC, and cannot WAIT for my science-obsessed 8yo to read the physical book when it comes out in a couple of weeks. One day, Einstein the penguin turns up at the house of the Stewart family and they discover he is on a rescue mission.Funny, intriguing and utterly heart-warming, this wonderful chapter book will delight newly confident junior readers. Her fantastical inventions are such fun, and I love how she recycles things to create them too, a fab message for readers. It has a brilliantly diverse cast of characters, that are so much fun, and are really brought to life with their dialogue, actions and gorgeous illustrations by Gladys Jose. But when all their fancy-pants gadgets fail in the hot-hot heat, it's down to Leonora to use her eco-engineering imagination. Can she invent something to shut down Brightworld and save her parents - before there's a meltdown?

Fans of ancient Egypt or kids studying it at primary school will really enjoy this attractive guide to the mysterious practice of mummification. Her villainous Uncle Luther is behind this new inventing show, and planning on stealing the creations made by the very talented contestants. And in another twist, the judges of the competition are two people very dear to Leonora’s heart. A cross between Poirot and Indiana Jones for younger ones, it’s a great book for reading aloud with all the silly puns, retro names and hilarious catchphrases. Colin the message-writing spider is a particular joy, along with motobike-riding, bumbag-wearing Edith. Really fun story about an amazing inventor who is being exploited by her cruel uncle and held captive on Crabby Island. From sugar gliders to red-lipped batfish, this collection of strange and unusual animals from around the world is an enjoyable factfile with lovely illustrations and an amusing read thanks to its rogue narrator, who shares jokey facts and silly names for each animal.Inventor Leonora Bolt has never left the remote island she lives on with her pet otter and an eccentric housekeeper! When a young castaway washes ashore, she begins to learn all about the mainland - which is in terrible danger. Can Leonora and her friends save it?

Does the book contain anything that teachers would wish to know about before recommending in class (strong language, sensitive topics etc.)? Fizzing with fun, friendship and fabulous inventions!' - Maria Kuzniar, author of The Ship of Shadows This quirky, imaginative tale is full of unexpected twists and turns, and is sure to engage young children. Distinctive, full-colour illustrations provide humour and visual interest, while the short chapters are ideal for newly-independent readers.
