About this deal

Monitor serum potassium and adjust dosages accordingly. For treatment of hypokalemia, monitor potassium levels daily or more often depending on the severity of hypokalemia until they return to normal. Monitor potassium levels monthly to biannually for maintenance or prophylaxis. Dilute the potassium chloride for oral solution with at least 4 ounces of cold water [see Warnings and Precautions ( Mix the powder, granule, or liquid form with water or fruit juice and drink the mixture slowly over 5 to 10 minutes.

Kidney disease: Renal potassium handling plays a significant role in determining the serum potassium level. Most potassium reabsorption occurs at the proximal convoluted tubule and loop of Henle. Potassium secretion begins at the distal convoluted tubule. The collecting duct may secrete or reabsorb potassium based on input from chemical messengers (e.g., aldosterone), tubular delivery of water and sodium, and serum potassium status. Pathology at any of these segments can influence how much potassium is retained or excreted. Examples of tubular pathologies that result in hypokalemia include genetic channelopathies (e.g., Bartter syndrome) and type I renal tubular acidosis. [4] [5]Normal daily requirements of potassium for adults are 40 to 80 mEq/day. For the prevention of hypokalemia, 20 to 40 mEq/day should be given in one or two divided doses. To treat hypokalemia, dosages of up to 100 mEq/day may be needed; consider the IV route if deficits are severe and ongoing losses are great. Lower dosages are used in children; consult the product information. Regarding sodium, this recipe assumes you’ll be sweating a lot. If you’re not, you can decrease the sodium to as little as 500mg of sodium, or anywhere in between. Potassium-rich foods include: squash, baked potatoes (skin on), spinach, lentils, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, zucchini, kidney or navy beans, raisins, watermelon, orange juice, bananas, cantaloupe, and low-fat milk or yogurt. Consume only the daily amounts recommended by your doctor or nutrition counselor. Measure liquid medicine with the dosing syringe provided, or with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one. But if you prefer a sweet drink, I give that option in the recipe. Signs of stomach bleeding, for example, coughing up blood, blood stool, or vomit that looks like coffee grounds. A high potassium level accompanied by weakness, nausea, irregular heartbeats, chest pain, and loss of movementMay not be suitable for some people including those with kidney failure, Addison's disease, severe burns, or severe wounds. Don’t worry if you’re not familiar with the last two ingredients. In my electrolyte drink recipe video, I show you how to find these common ingredients at any grocery store. Sports Drinks Replenish Your Lost Electrolytes Some tablets are made with a shell that is not absorbed or melted in the body. Part of this shell may appear in your stool. This is normal and will not make the medicine less effective.
