Character models also sometimes awkwardly snap into their next pose or animation unintentionally if you run through dialogue too quickly. While this may seem very button-mashy – and to an extent it is – it’s a combat system that nonetheless forces you to be reactive to what your opponent is doing.

Imagine that this edition is kinda like Yakuza with a Dragon Ball twist and mixed with a little of the fighting vibe of Xenoverse or Tenkaichi when the combat starts and you become an arena fighter. Your character simply has to find a fishing spot on the map and everything plays out via a quick-time mini-game where all you have to do is press the right buttons flashed at the right moment. That lack of consistent polish finds its way into the gameplay at times as well, with tons of annoyingly repeated dialogue lines when flying around the open world.Kemps concluded that "[i]f you're looking for an enjoyable way to see the life and times of adult Goku through a new perspective, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will grant your wish. Goku’s version of it will see him pulling out and fishing with his tail, in blatant homage to the original anime series when he was often seen doing it as a child. While the boosts from food can prove quite useful if you're stuck on a fight, for the most part it's not something you need to worry about. When combined with a selection of super moves specific to each character and defensive options like a burst that repels enemies, the encounters never become too stale or repetitive.
