About this deal

Hang your sustainable Halloween wreath on your door or wall, showcasing a blend of nature and creativity for a sustainable and charming decoration. There’s a reason why ghosts wear old sheets! Many Halloween costumes are produced in time for the holiday, worn once and then thrown away. A 2019 study by environmental charity Hubbub and the Fairyland Trust found that the UK produced over 2000 tonnes of seasonal plastic waste (about 83 million plastic bottles’ worth) from costumes and fast fashion brands. Now, that’s scary. Can you put together a fun costume from items of clothing you already own? If you’re struggling, can you borrow something from a friend? Or have a Halloween costume swap if you don’t want to wear the same costume as the previous year? If it’s for kids, can you swap costumes with other parents?

Below, I’ve gathered up some awesome ideas for low-waste and zero-waste Halloween decorations from some really creative stylists. In a few cases, I even came up with some ideas myself, but I’ll mostly give credit where credit is due (i.e. not me). Wait.. Zero Waste Halloween Decorations?Buying eco-friendly Halloween decorations that are recyclable – such as paper bunting, signs, and lanterns. Thankfully, there are manyethical alternativesto regular chocolate and sweets brands. Look out for Fairtrade products (like these mini chocolates), or those that are Certified Organic, or have other independent certifications. Hire a costume – if you really want to petrify people or have a specific character in mind, hire rather than buy a Halloween costume. This saves you money and means it’ll be reused rather than binned or sit in a cupboard for years. These terrariums offer a unique and imaginative way to celebrate the season while promoting reuse and eco-consciousness. And there are so many different ways you could make them!

As you hand out your eco-friendly Halloween candy, you can also remind kids to recycle paper and foil. In the midst of their candy comas, they might not remember, but it’s worth a try. Make Fruit Enticing After Halloween has been and gone, don’t forget to compost the pumpkin in your food waste bin or compost heap. To create your pumpkin’s ridges, first take a long piece of string and thread your needle. Put the needle through the top of the pumpkin and thread it all the way through to the bottom. Keep threading it from the top to bottom several times, tying a knot at the bottom each time to keep your ridges tight. (See the video tutorial above for a demonstration of this.) Bring the folded ends of the strips up and glue them to the top circle. Before closing it up all the way, bring the inner tabs up and attach those to the top circle to make your pumpkin shape. Then finish closing your lantern by attaching the last couple of outer strips. Place a small amount of sand or pebbles in the bottom of each glass bottle to provide stability for the candles. If you don’t have the time or desire to make your own costume, consider hosting a costume swap or asking friends to lend you something that will easily create a look.
