About this deal

To do well as a law student you need to feel driven not to approach the subject superficially, but to try to achieve a very detailed understanding of the law.

All of these views have found their place in the ongoing conversation among our law-makers as to what sort of society we should live in. Personally, I feel lucky to have started my legal reading with this book as Hutchinson became an inspiration to me; a man that engenders what a barrister should be. Anyway, failure is a necessary part of the learning process for lawyers; losing is a regular part of professional life. There was a lot to digest so it was quite a slow and considered read, but it was full of helpful insight. If they haven’t, then what does the state of conversation indicate at the moment about how our law-makers might resolve this issue? Arguing on the side of Politics, Sumption points to the legal sectors over-involvement in affairs which would seem wholly political, galvanised as a result of the deficit of effective politicians.

I found Letters to a Law Student very useful in helping me decide that I wanted to study law, and helping me to make a successful application; I still have a copy sitting on my bookshelf in case I need to turn to it again. Williams clearly explains the legal process from the Magistrate’s Court to the Supreme Court of Justice, and, with the aid of pictures and diagrams, helpfully distinguishes the differences between the function of Common Law Courts in England and most European Courts, having to implement a constitution. Listen to your colleagues as they practice their new tongue and see if they are using the language precisely. The book includes chapters very relevant to those considering studying law and those doing a law degree. One of the letters gives advice on how to interview well, another on the common traps to avoid in your application, and another on the LNAT (the compulsory admissions test for law at Oxford and a handful of other universities). An excellent and comprehensive guide for all students who are considering doing a law degree or are already in the midst of one. You can also submit your own questions to 'Dear Nick' and read the author's responses to other student letters. As the discipline of Law is notorious for requiring a large volume and breadth of reading, it can be daunting knowing where to start before you embark on your legal journey.

However, there was absolutely no support for the idea that we should live in a society that practises euthanasia either in statutory provisions created by legislators or cases previously decided by the judges. This is not only for the benefit of the student, but also on behalf of the profession, and the clients who will be served by that future lawyer. It makes being a lawyer seem hard and magical, and this helps to inflate the value of the professional knowledge, both inside and outside the system. Papers are the owner’s goods and chattels: they are his dearest property; and are so far from enduring a seizure, that they will hardly bear an inspection … Where is the written law that gives any magistrate such a power?

I would recommend this book to any student, regardless of whether they are studying or thinking about studying law as the early chapters in particular give good general advice about writing and thinking. Not only providing a basic knowledge of the Law, McBride’s letters in response deliver a clear guidance on what can be expected at University when studying Law, and whether the Law is the right subject for you. The majority of pages are undamaged with some creasing or tearing, and pencil underlining of text, but this is minimal.Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH).
