About this deal

One day, I went to a new fruit and vegetable shop run by a Pakistani family. At their shop, I found bags of urid “lentils” and papadums for sale ( These very ones, actually). I ended up buying both. Sensations Poppadoms are made in a factory that also handles: Barley, Wheat and Gluten. Sensations Lime & Coriander Chutney Poppadoms also contain Barley. It is, therefore, safe to conclude that Sensations Poppadoms must be avoided if you are sensitive to gluten or suffer from any form of coeliac disease. Some take away chains now offer gluten free pizzas. If they don’t, sometimes outlets will cook your gluten free pizza base if you supply them with one, althoughcontaminationin the kitchen may be an issue.

Most of our products are suitable for vegetarians, but please refer to the declaration on each label. Kirsty’s started out as a free from brand, so not surprisingly, all their ready meals are gluten-free. Fortunately, there are a few gluten-free cookie options floating around which used to be in their free from section. The papad made with only urad flour are cooked on a hot tawa until they form bubbles and become crispy. These are suitable for frying too. In traditional sadhya meals (like Onam Sadhya / Vishu Sadhya), people serve Kerala Pappadams along with Steamed rice, Erissery, Olan, Beans Thoran, Sambar, Rasam, Parippu, Puli Inji, and Payasam.Indian Onion Chutney– This cold red onion dip goes well with Poppadums. It is made with onions with spices and mixing them with a tomato-based sauce. You can read more about this over on Coeliac UK here and more about barley here. 30 ‘accidentally’ gluten-free products in Tesco: Public Service Announcement I’m not sure I understand why these aren’t in the free from aisle, but you can find them in the cereal aisle.

Whilst these are actually a free from product (so not technically ‘accidentally’ gluten-free), they’re mixed in with all the muggle food, so you might miss them. Never expected to find gluten-free oats outside of the free from aisle. Head to the muggle cereal aisle for this! Cooking poppadoms in the air fryer is much healthier than deep-frying but there are a few important points to note. Poppadoms are usually made with rice and lentil flour. Make sure these are cooked in oil that has not been used to cook gluten containing foods. If you enjoy eating tiny fish, heads and all, then head to Aldi, they have two lots of whitebait, one is just lightly dusted and the other is lightly dusted with lemon and pepper seasoning, both use a gluten free coating. This is the first time a whitebait has been available that is gluten free (it has been in about a month now), all others have used a wheat based coating.

Though these are actually free from products (so not accidentally gluten-free at all) I thought I’d include them as they always seem to be mixed in amongst all the muggle products.Told you so! More gluten-free and vegan options – this one is with all the tinned beans though, NOT in the chillers. So I’ve included this just in case that’s the case in your local Sainsburys. Never thought I’d live long enough to see Ginsters do anything gluten-free! Yes, Papadams are 100% Vegan. There may only be risk on cross contamination in factories they are made. Is this the Only way to Cook Poppadoms?
