Robert Wolford was a prison inmate who had lived in Tremont, and he claimed in July 2012 that he had information about the location of Berry's body. He led police to an empty lot on Cleveland's West Side, where they conducted a fruitless search. [47] [58] He was sentenced in January 2013 to 4 + 1⁄ 2 years in prison for obstruction of justice, making a false report, and making a false alarm. This happened because Castro pitted the women against each other, preventing them from creating meaningful bonds, friendships, and connections. Barely out of her own tumultuous childhood, Michelle was estranged from her family and fighting for custody of her young son when she disappeared. Local police believed she had run away, so they removed her from the missing persons lists fifteen months after she vanished. Castro tormented her with these facts, reminding her that no one was looking for her, that the outside world had forgotten her. But Michelle would not be broken. The next day we head to Cleveland's Magnetic North Studio, where Knight is recording a charity single with her 16-year-old friend, Mitchell. The taxi driver, Will, like every cabbie I meet in Cleveland, is keen to talk about Castro and his captives. He tells me that he was friends with the father of Gina DeJesus and would regularly go out looking for her. He passed Castro's house every day. "I didn't have a clue. Can you imagine? Every day I drove past." He is beating himself up about it. "You know, Castro was in a band. I actually went to see them play." It comes out like a confession. "They were pretty good. He played bass guitar." You sense the city shares a kind of collective guilt. I find myself confusing her captivity with prison. She doesn't notice. "Is it true you were made pregnant five times when you were in prison?" a b Caniglia, John (July 9, 2013). From Michelle Knight - Cleveland kidnapping survivor and #1 New York Times bestselling author of Finding Me comes an inspirational book about healing and resilience, on the five-year anniversary of her escape. From what I understand, Lifetime Movie Network‘s adaptation of the “Cleveland Kidnappings” will be airing soon. I’ll probably skip it, but if you forego reading Knight’s memoir, I’d recommend watching. She is a courageous and strong woman. If there’s one take-away message Knight has for readers, it’s the following: Michelle was a young single mother when she was kidnapped by a local school bus driver named Ariel Castro. For more than a decade afterward, she endured unimaginable torture at the hand of her abductor. In 2003 Amanda Berry joined her in captivity, followed by Gina DeJesus in 2004. Their escape on May 6, 2013, made headlines around the world. Steer, Jen (July 9, 2013). "TRANSCRIPT: Cleveland kidnapping victims say thank you for support". newsnet5.com. I could write on and on about this memoir but I'm not going to. There is so much more that is said in this memoir that I couldn't even begin to write about. I thank Michelle on her absolute bravery in revealing her story to the public. In doing so I hope it only strengthens her resolve to continue on being free, living life for herself and knowing that she is a powerful and amazingly strong woman. I hope and pray that all your scars, mental and physical, heal. a b Almasy, Steve; Smith, Matt (May 7, 2013). "911 call – 'I've been kidnapped!' – cops find three women missing for year". CNN. Knight was present and handed out yellow balloons to spectators, which she said represented missing children. The balloons were released before DeJesus's aunt began the demolition with a swing of a crane. [130] [131] [132] The house has been completely blurred out on the street view of Google Maps. A Cuyahoga County grand jury returned a true bill of indictment against Castro on June 7. It contained 329 counts, including 2 counts of aggravated murder (under different sections of the Ohio criminal code) for his role in the termination of one of the women's pregnancies. The indictments covered only the period from August 2002 to February 2007. The county prosecutor, Timothy J. McGinty, stated that the investigation was ongoing, and that any further findings would be presented to the grand jury. McGinty said that pursuing a death penalty specification would be considered following completion of indictment proceedings. [109] [110]
