About this deal

Funnily enough, I find it harder to write not in verse, though I feel I am now getting the hang of it! My novel THE GIANTS AND THE JONESES is going to be made into a film by the same team who made the Harry Potter movies, and I have written three books of stories about the anarchic PRINCESS MIRROR-BELLE who appears from the mirror and disrupts the life of an otherwise ordinary eight-year-old. I have just finished writing a novel for teenagers. I also continued to write “grown-up” songs and perform them in folk clubs and on the radio, and have recently released two CDs of these songs. Julia Donaldson and illustrator Sharon King-Chai have put together this BEAUTIFUL alphabet book FULL of animals.

Many many thanks to Pan Macmillan Australia for a copy of Animalphabet for my kids and I to review! Dot loved this book and her favourite part was guessing what animal came next. We have read this together many times and she is enjoying the accomplishment of getting more and more animals correct.

My real breakthrough was THE GRUFFALO, again illustrated by Axel. We work separately - he’s in London and I’m in Glasgow - but he sends me letters with lovely funny pictures on the envelopes.

What do you think now you’ve read my review of Animalphabet by Julia Donaldson, do you have anyone in your family or friends circle who would enjoy this brand new picture book? I’ve got more book recommendations too! Animalphabet makes the perfect Christmas gift with eye-catching artwork and an exotic array of animals to marvel over. Can you guess who has more legs than a butterfly? And who is wrinklier than a hedgehog? Ditto loves flaps and was more interested in seeing what is behind each flap than the related text but this is a book that will grow with the child and can be read and enjoyed over the years to come. My daughter just wanted to grab at it so I kept it out of her reach because I didn’t want her to destroy it!YES YES YES!!!! It is just SO GORGEOUS!!! I am going to buy some copies to give friends with young kids as presents! But even if you don’t have or know any kids, the illustrations are just so beautiful and the book would make a wonderful addition to any book collection! LOVE IT! You can see some of the illustrations above, drawn by Sharon King-Chai, who wrote and illustrated Lucy Ladybird. I really enjoy writing verse, even though it can be fiendishly difficult. I used to memorise poems as a child and it means a lot to me when parents tell me their child can recite one of my books. I grew up in a tall Victorian London house with my parents, grandmother, aunt, uncle, younger sister Mary and cat Geoffrey (who was really a prince in disguise. Mary and I would argue about which of us would marry him). The whole thing is like a beautiful puzzle too with hints as to what the next animal is going to be. Very clever.

King-Chai’s illustrations are enchanting with great splashes of colour with the scenes perfectly matching the animals depicted with forest scenes, water scenes and desert scenes. A feast for the eyes!!

Don't Miss

Before Malcolm and I had our three sons we used to go busking together and I would write special songs for each country; the best one was in Italian about pasta. I studied Drama and French at Bristol University, where I met Malcolm, a guitar-playing medic to whom I’m now married. One of my television songs, A SQUASH AND A SQUEEZE, was made into a book in 1993, with illustrations by the wonderful Axel Scheffler. It was great to hold the book in my hand without it vanishing in the air the way the songs did. This prompted me to unearth some plays I’d written for a school reading group, and since then I’ve had 20 plays published. Most children love acting and it’s a tremendous way to improve their reading. When I opened this up at my front door I am not exaggerating when I say my heart SKIPPED A BEAT! This is absolutely the most beautiful children’s book I have ever seen in my life! The colours and illustrations are just GORGEOUS! I was afraid to let my kids read it in case they ripped it!
