About this deal

It is only when we peel away the layers of the past that we clearly see the present and begin the future, thus fulfilling our destiny.

It’s not a terrible life; she works, goes to the pub with her colleagues, has lunch with her family and chats with her university best friend and current housemate Kiran but there’s always a dark shadow in her mind threatening to cloud over her at any time. Her fellow Nyxians are a rootless generation of Ravs and Abbys, Stellas and Yukos, whose shifting, transnational accents mirror the shifting, transnational lifestyles they led before. Older people usually burned out, had children or nervous breakdowns, quit and retrained as something more meaningful, like pastry chefs or yoga teachers. Sauma’s new novel, by contrast, is set in the near future, in a world parallel to our own, where charismatic CEO and modern-day pied piper Norman Best offered a select few millennials an escape from their angst-ridden ruts via a wormhole in the Pacific Ocean. The highly anticipated image editing tools (Pan, Zoom, and Vary region) are now supported in the Midjourney V6 model. Within Iris' criticisms of modern society, she comments a lot on how relationships nowadays are so fake and lacking genuine empathy; purely existing for convenience, which I believe the author echoed within the dull exchanges Iris has with all the subcharacters in the novel. Iris woke up feeling like there was a great weight bearing down on her body … The Smog’s long, smoky tendrils were reaching around her in an unwelcome, suffocating hug. They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together. Each knows tiny bits of the story, but none quite communicate enough for anyone to really understand the impacts of what happened.

All those conversations that should happen, but don’t; the things we are too frightened to say, the decisions we leave until it is too late. When she leaves Earth, she’s hoping that her mother, Eleanor, will ask her to stay, but Eleanor has kept her own counsel ever since her husband killed himself when Iris was five – a factor, it’s implied, in Iris’s teenage experience of suicidal depression, after she was tricked into giving a friend’s boyfriend a blowjob on camera at a party. I guess I was looking for a complicated plot when it became apparent to me that I was looking for something that was not there; the plot was simple.

This allowed us to judge the situation easier and the change in how the narration addressed the points clearly reflected Iris' changes in attitude and perspective over time. As endings to dystopian novels go, this novel's ending (like many of the other aspects of it) is fairly anticlimatic. This life-changing Audible Original features a powerful mix of one-on-one life-coaching sessions and a personal narrative with vital take-aways that you can start using immediately. The next day you stay in bed, scrolling through your social media feeds and wondering why everyone else seems to be achieving so much. We at Penguin Random House Australia acknowledge that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the Traditional Custodians and the first storytellers of the lands on which we live and work.

But Everything You Ever Wanted defies clear genre classifications: it certainly is not an AGA-saga, a bodice-ripper or even chick-lit. I realize this now that after reading it was advertised more so as realistic fiction, so I guess that's my fault.

I think she does die eventually; that all of the imagery of her de-robing and the echoes in the narrative of her swimming with her younger sister in a pond in a park in London represents a form of spiritual release for Iris. And if she does have regrets after arriving on Nyx, is there anything that she and the other inhabitants can actually do? After a week-long journey “via an underwater wormhole in the Pacific”, claustrophobia grows in the sealed hub that becomes home to Iris and her fellow cast members, with a measure of tension in the question of who will be next to crack from boredom and try their luck in the unbreathable atmosphere outside. We, as readers, get to experience Iris' first few days on Nyx and all her fresh excitment and optimism for her new life.

I will continue with her books, but she's got a way to go if she wants to successfully target the audience she was going after in this particular novel.
