About this deal

We’ll have cover reveals for Eric LaRocca’s disturbing Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke and Maria Abrams’ haunting She Who Rules the Dead over the next couple of weeks, too! A startling affair...I’ll be cleaning up particles of darkness in my office for weeks.” - Josh Malerman ( Bird Box, Inspection) A startling affair… I’ll be cleaning up particles of darkness in my office for weeks.”– Josh Malerman, author of Bird Box andMalorie

In the final story, A man has trouble standing up for himself due to a longtime habit of politeness that has been deeply ingrained in his psyche since childhood. In five unique and bizarre tales Katy Michelle Quinn ( Girl in the Walls), Charles Austin Muir ( Slippery When Metastasized), Jo Quenell ( The Mud Ballad), Brendan Vidito ( Nightmares in Ecstasy), and Sam Richard ( Sabbath of the Fox-Devils) each bring you their own disturbing vision of what lurks in the darkness of your local movie theater.De Schutter said: “It’s simply not acceptable that we have more than a fifth of the population in a rich country such as the UK at risk of poverty today,” referring to government data showing that 14.4 million people lived in relative poverty in 2021-22 – a million more than the previous year. “The policies in place are not working or not protecting people in poverty, and much more needs to be done for these people to be protected.” Arc Words: The question "what have you done today to deserve your eyes?" first shows up as part of a story Zoe tells, and is referenced a few times afterwards, usually in reference to Zoe's psychological hold over Agnes. This story was interesting. I wouldn't say this story had a twist. As she's slowly slipping into madness and desperation from missing her son Olive thinks the man that shows up is an angel here to save them. I didn't understand then how she ended up pregnant because I'm assuming that James couldn't get her pregnant. So the angel got her pregnant? But then when she crossed him by changing his room he made her lose the baby or were these things really miracles? It doesn't make sense then for the angel to take them. Were they going to die from a gas leak and that was when he was going to take them? I left with too many questions. Each story pulsates with Vidito's characteristic dark humor, atmospheric tension, and visceral prose. This is pornography for the devotee of horror, the morbidly curious—pornography for the end of the world.

No disrespect to Eric LaRocca but maybe they doesn’t get out much. There are some verrrry gruesome books and stories out there, not to mention movies. This was like a 3.5 on a scale of 1 to 10. It was a trifle nauseating in places, and I most people shouldn’t read this while eating lunch. But people, you shouldn’t read and eat anyway. You might get stuff on your book. It was a fun read, gives a thrill at the end. This book contains a bit of violence which didn't reach that horrific level for me but was actually entertaining however all the wires and electrical stuff was quite hard for me to imagine. The author’s strong prose does an impressive job anchoring everything on solid ground even as the stories spiral into surrealist grotesquerie. LaRocca is a writer to watch.”– Publishers Weekly Bad People Abuse Animals: The point where it's apparent Zoe is not as nice of a person as she appears is where she commands Agnes to find a salamander in the park and kill it.

See a Problem?

The story that’s going to stay with me the longest is Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke, especially the scene describing Agnes’ dinner. I definitely want to read more books by this author. So why—and how—did this independently published epistolary novel gain so much recognition? Their next best-selling title has sold around 500 or 600 copies. It’s a question Weirdpunk gets from other indie writers and publishing houses all the time. And Richard… well, he doesn’t really know. He is an active member of the Horror Writers Association and currently resides in Boston, MA with his partner.

Sometimes I really don't get what it is that makes something like this so freaking popular. Apparently people love disturbing and completely unsatisfying. I don't mind disturbing, but I need some questions answered.Things that could have been used to unsettle the reader (how does a teenager crucify themselves, alone? what's up with how they're about to run out of food almost immediately and yet somehow keep having access to food?) seem most of all like plot holes. Perhaps it was intentional but the skill is just not there to make it WORK. The surrealism/spooky elements are not given enough attention to not look like accidents/plot holes. Here's the hard truth: I have no idea,” he says. “Well, I have some idea, but the answer has less to do with anything I did.” This is a psychological horror story. Nothing presented is supernatural, the fear is from our minds and how people can be manipulated. This is a story of a manipulator and how things can go when manipulating someone with the wrong state of mind. Beyond that you'll have to read for yourself.

The writing seems inexperienced at best, amateruish at worst. To the point that I have reservations about reading other books from this same publisher (knowing that that is unfair.) Repetitive and unimaginative in its language. I have developed new pet peeves against the words/phrases "merely," "he/she/they sensed [bodily sensation]", and "what he/she/they didn't seem to notice was ..." Queer misery porn with nothing particularly important or momentous to say. Reads very fast and was kind of entertaining. Also, this is pretty much a blatant rip-off of The Sluts by Dennis Cooper. Richard is taking an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach to his newfound success. Despite having more eyes on Weirdpunk, he plans to continue conducting business as usual, though he might up the number of subscriptions for 2022 novellas from 30 by a bit.It begins with a divorced couple and their disturbed son and ends up on an island in Batsh*t Insane territory. I still have no clue what happened. Unsettling. Unusual. Ultimately satisfying. These are the words that come to mind when I think about this collection.
