Potassium citrate works by reducing the acidity of the urine. This helps relieve the discomfort of passing urine and also makes the environment in the bladder less suitable for the survival of the infecting bacteria. Non-bacterial cystitis can be caused by a number of triggers including certain soaps, deodorants, insufficient water-based liquid intake, or even tight trousers. Liquid medicine - take two 5 ml spoonfuls, stirred into a whole glassful of water. You can take up to three doses a day.

This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy. This medicine should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless considered essential by your doctor. Seek medical advice from your doctor or midwife if you are pregnant or breastfeeding and have symptoms of cystitis. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines, complementary therapies or if you have a medical condition. This medicine may not be suitable for you if you have a medical condition or taking any medications such as those listed in the Patient Information Leaflet. At the time of writing there is limited published information regarding the use of potassium citrate in breastfeeding. Cystopurin is generally well tolerated but it may not be suitable for everyone. You should always consult the patient information leaflet before taking this medication to ensure it is suitable for you to use.Drink lots of water – try to drink around five pints a day during your 48 hour treatment, if possible and suitable. A small glass of cold water is recommended in cases of cystitis, some individuals may also find cranberry juice helpful in relieving symptoms.
