Before Jenny became a writer, she was Head of English in a secondary school; she now loves visiting schools as an author and delivering funny and inspiring talks and workshops. The brother and sister relationship between Rose and Arthur shows the natural ups and downs all siblings go through, and therefore feels realistic and relatable to children reading the book. This is great for children who may themselves be going through a bad patch with their siblings, as it shows that through all their differences exists an unbreakable bond. The familial bond is extended through to their grandad, who also features in the book. As little old man with asthma, keeping the magic of childhood alive and looking after the grandchildren, he reminds me of my own grandad. From the books I’ve read, it seems fairly uncommon to have siblings and a grandparent both feature, as they’re often built around a single child facing ‘the hero’s journey’ alone, and so it was refreshing to read. Open the door to a spellbinding world where the wilderness is alive and a deep magic rises from the earth itself . . .

Now the twins are eleven, Roar is just a memory. But when they help Grandad clean out the attic, Arthur is horrified as Grandad is pulled into the folding bed and vanishes. Is he playing a joke? Or is Roar... real? year old twins Rose and Arthur have grown up spending holidays with their fun loving granddad, but as they have grown older they have started to grow apart. Arthur still wants to play imaginative games whilst Rose would rather be on her phone, now in the final summer holidays before starting secondary school their relationship and imaginations are about to be tested. Yet it continues to captivate us. And rightfully so! Whether we were raised on a series of unfortunate events, or a progression of mysteries we had to solve with Frank, Al, Chet or Nancy, or even figuring our way thru a phantom tollbooth or bridges destined for failure, WE made it thru. However, while clearing out the attic at their grandad's house they stubble upon the old camp bed that was the entrance to the land or roar, Arthur and Rose find out their imaginary world may not have just been in their minds...
