The story is a fairly formulaic crime thriller, but who needs plot when you have lots of good-looking people driving fast cars and blowing things up? Don't get me wrong, the design remains a great listen with a couple enveloping enhancements across the ceiling channels, mostly coming from the sounds of engines echoing all around or the music reverberating to the speakers.HDR and WCG work overtime on the stronger tones and on the excellent shadow detail, bringing the modestly budgeted 2001 piece - which was arguably a bit rough around the edges - into the modern limelight, as if it has been recoloured to stand proud alongside its considerably bigger budgeted siblings. Snappy and sleek, we get 2001-era interviews with director Rob Cohen, stunt coordinators Mic Rodgers and Mike Justus, and cast including Walker, Vin Diesel and Jordana Brewster, plus the usual quick-cut behind-the-scenes production footage. Starting with The Fast and the Furious, the first six films were all shot on photochemical film in Super 35 format.
However, these moments are very far and few in between and honestly, fail to generate a satisfying hemispheric soundfield. However, the selection of hip-hop tunes better enjoys the extra-breathing room, displaying superb, room-penetrating clarity and appreciable warmth.
The greens, reds and blues dazzle the screen with a richer, sumptuous glow than its HD SDR counterpart.
Blacks offer the most improvement with inkier, silkier shadows, but the overall picture is also darker with generally average delineation within the darkest corners.
