I never thought I would say this but I think Love Actually may have actually (no pun intended) overtaken 'It's a wonderful life' to become my favourite Christmas film of all time.

Eight stories involving the love lives of more than a dozen characters are brought together over one Christmas and climax on Christmas Eve, from the recent widower Daniel (Liam Neeson), the failing marriage of Karen (Emma Thompson) and Harry (Alan Rickman), the ageing rocker (Bill Nighy) who just wants to get paid, through to the Prime Minister (Hugh Grant) falling for a member of Number 10's staff (Martine McCutcheon). This film has had a regular slot on tv and everytime it is on, I always found myself sitting down to watch it.These London lives and loves collide, mingle and climax on Christmas Eve-again and again and again-with romantic, hilarious and bittersweet consequences for anyone lucky (or unlucky) enough to be under love's spell. But plenty of the characters and situations were enjoyable enough for me to become interested in finding out just how all the relationships would work out in the end.

As the years have gone by some of the scenes in the film have stayed with me and have become more and more powerful. Multiple love stories interweave to create an overarching theme of romantic possibility as a diverse variety of people seek happiness. If you are in Australia or New Zealand (DVD Region 4), note that almost all DVDs distributed in the UK by the BBC and 2entertain are encoded for both Region 2 and Region 4.The likes of Billy Bob Thornton, Rowan Atkinson and Denise Richards turn up in cameos, helping make this film a throwback to those all-star, multi-plotted comedies of the 1960s and '70s, such as It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World ( 1963). This allows the narrative to focus on his becoming accepted by the group, and then his struggle to break free, which settles into a solid three-act story.

Thus, while the setting remains underground football violence, Love switches the attention to a different character, the youngster breaking into the crowd. I've seen a lot of the classic and modern Christmas films and there aren't many which measure up to the quality of Love Actually.
