About this deal

Beyond the unavoidable differences found in every acoustic piano’s keyboard, some manufacturers add additional weight to the hammer heads and the keys themselves. They often do this by adding lead, which allows them to fine-tune the feel of the keys that make up their piano keyboard. Each manufacturer has a different approach and a different idea of what the right feel is. One of the biggest draws of a mechanical keyboard is that you can easily swap out the keycaps for a different set. As we discussed in the section on key switch types, the most popular switch type, when it comes to keycaps, is ‘Cherry MX’ compatible. Therefore, by far the most ubiquitous keycap mount is Cherry MX style. If I don't get a response, I'm going to just dive in the deep end (I used to repair video projectors for a living, so I kind of have an idea of what I'm in for).

Aesthetically, there is a wider choice of case colors in aluminium with even cerakoting and electrophoretical coating an option. But as you might imagine, with great beauty comes great expense. If you play a digital piano long enough, you will undoubtedly develop a list of favorites and some absolute must-have preferences that you expect in the keyboards that you play. Not Weighted You gain more control over-weighted keys as compared to unweighted ones because they don’t provide the resistance needed to improve skills. You can also customize the sound of the Alesis Recital. Five voices are included: acoustic piano, electric piano, synth, organ and bass. That’s a wide variety of sounds coming from a beginner’s keyboard!

So, in the interests of trying to keep you with me, the TL;DR of keyboard switch types is this: If you are looking for a mechanical keyboard (perhaps your first one), opt for a board with Cherry MX, or Cherry MX compatible switches such as those made by Kailh. Choose a switch type which, at least on paper, sounds appealing. Buy it, and see how you get on. If you type with a lot of force or play video games and use the keyboard on a smooth surface, there’s a high chance the peripheral will move. Not only is this inconvenient, but it also affects your typing accuracy. Metallic Cases Many players who use a keyboard for recording purposes, such as you would with a MIDI controller, prefer unweighted keys. That makes it easier to play the keyboard to get notes and tones for various instruments that don’t share the piano’s unique characteristics. I'd love that solution otherwise though, and I am using a corsair k70. It probably has whatever functionality you're referring to. It is a step higher than the semi-weighted type and is a good alternative for practicing on a real-like piano.

In terms of tactile switches, the Kailh Speed Copper feels like they have a little more resistance than a standard Kailh Brown. The Kailh Speed Coppers felt very similar to the Zealio switches in the WASD CODE board. It would take a real enthusiast to be able to discern any difference in a blind test. If you were to ask me today which switch to opt for as the best ‘all rounder’ I would suggest the Kaihl Brown or Speed Copper, or the Zealio switches. All felt great for typing/coding with the tactile feel providing a nice compromise between feel and volume.First, I want to ask that you NOT discard your original epoxy contaminated keys. If you won't be continuing this project (and chose to buy a replacement keyboard instead), I'd LOVE to have them to continue my experimentations into this Roland "Red Plague" epoxy problem.

For example, if the manufacturer finds that the keyboard case sounds hollow, they may add rubber or foam. These materials absorb the sound when the keycaps bottom out. This is because of all the components that are on this board. Generally, it uses materials like plastic and metal, but sometimes, you may also come across peripherals that use wood. Plastic Cases What stood out to me from the data is how the graded-weight action of the Kawai MP11SE was heavier in the middle of the keyboard rather than the lowest end. I wonder if that's an anomaly in the particular keybed tested, or is reproducible across instruments? Very strange. I also wonder if the grand piano/seesaw-like design of the Kawai wooden key actions might feel different to the hands compared to the end-pivot designs of most other keybeds. Different inertia despite a similar touch weight, perhaps?

Also, some are touch-sensitive in that if you strike it lightly, it will make a softer sound, and if you strike it hard it will generate a much louder sound. You get to gain experience in real-life piano even if you don’t have one. Knowing just how something feels in operation could drastically improve how you play. edit: the CP73 is also marketed as having a balanced (i.e. even) action; interesting to see the variation across the keybed. Quality control issue? Perhaps just takes a bit of time for a new action to "bed in"?
