About this deal

Now, you might be wondering if something like that could even factor into a “cozy” fantasy–and the answer is a resounding yes. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied. This last one may have been particularly jarring to me as I'm a Brit and it's such an well-known Americanism that I can't dissociate it from the modern real-world place of America. It often felt like it wasn't sure whether it wanted to be a cozy story or a more high stakes adventure, which lead to some slightly off-pacing in places.

the book can’t decide whether it’s cosy or high-stakes, and though i was intrigued by the premise of a vengeful queen she wasn’t actually present much. They're filled with so much love, tenderness, and care for one another and are actively communicating through conflicts and roadblocks to be better partners for each other. I didn’t know going into it that it was going to be a series but I’m definitely excited to continue.the stakes should be low, the conflict should be mundane (but important to the characters, and by extension, to us), and there should definitely not be multiple near death experiences. Reyne is a Queen’s guard who is fed up of her life of sacrificing herself for the sake of a cruel ruler and wants out with her lover. My partner found me sat on the kitchen floor keeping an eye on the cookies Reyna made me bake while still reading and slightly dancing.

They're always ensuring the other is okay and talking through their issues, but it doesn't feel like organic conversations people should have. Still, I did read the whole thing, and would be willing to recommend it (with caveats) to cozy fantasy fans who are more into *vibes* than a tightly-written and well-paced plot, provided you also aren't as wildly uncomfortable with ass-smacking in the workplace as I am. I really understand the desire to represent a positive lesbian relationship, but Kianthe and Reyna's relationship just felt. Trata sobre una tetería donde hay libros, pero hay un poquito de drama y acción, y la acción que hay está muy bien, ya la querrían muchos otros libros de fantasía. I always love a queer cozy fantasy and was very excited this was set in a colder climate, as I enjoy these in particular.finally, my biggest pet peeve of the entire book: how lazy the worldbuilding was, and how heavy handed the author was with IRL references.

the worldbuilding did not seem to be any more fleshed out than "typical vaguely arthurian fantasy setting," and this was especially seen through the unimaginative use of items/concepts from real life.It also ends on a little epilogue which promises new as well as our main characters, and surely more shenanigans. Can't Spell Treason Without Tea by Rebecca Thorne is a gorgeous treat of a book, filled with cosy adventure, sapphic romance and good feelings. totally googly eyed for each other, which is fine, but also feels a little like the early-relationship stage despite having been together for quite some time? What follows is a tale of mishaps, mysteries, dragons, and a murderous queen throwing the realm's biggest temper tantrum.

It leaves off with a bit more story still to come, so I really look forward to the next installment. Also the far reaches of the Queen and her petty ire, had made her stay, too fearful of the consequences. This book was pretty cute at first for sure, but while I don't need a plot to keep me interested in a good set of characters, I do need *something*. The people of Tawney maybe apprehensive initially but bonds are built slowly and it was nice to see a helpful community, which comes together despite their differences.
