About this deal

Separated by distance--and Papi's secrets--the two girls are forced to face a new reality in which their father is dead and their lives are forever altered.

One of the things we see is the risk to young women being taken advantage of by men resulting in owing a “debt” or needing to go to certain lengths to survive, seeing Camino trying desperately to avoid that life for herself after losing the protection her Father had provided her during his life was eye opening to the culture most of us aren’t aware of.

A story of the difference money can make, and of the crippling grip of poverty and the hold it has over even the most determined lives. Acevedo's free verse poems for each girl share an easy cadence and thoughtfulness, yet each girl's perspective is clear: Camino is strong but fearful of the dangers that threaten her life and hopes; Yahaira's anger is palpable, but so is her tenderness and love for her girlfriend Dre. Little did I know that it would be the perfect way to enhance the impact of Yahaira’s and Camino’s story.

As well as being exceptionally affecting on grief, forgiveness and family secrets, Clap When You Land is also devastatingly sharp on the exploitative tendencies of tourism. Life's not easy for them on the island, but they have it better than their neighbours as a result of Camino's beloved Papi working in the US for most of year.To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Separated by distance - and Papi's secrets - the two girls are forced to face a new reality in which their father is dead and their lives are forever altered.

They aren’t just connected by blood but also by their love for their father and when push comes to shove that’s all that really matters. The stunning new novel in verse from the 2019 Carnegie Medal winning and Waterstones Book Prize shortlisted author of THE POET X When it seems like they've lost everything of their father, they learn of each other. I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I opened this book but when I saw the writing style I was a little bit sceptical at first.Me in person when a man is telling me that poetry is gross: Would you say a song without music is gross? This story was so moving and heartfelt, addled with grief, loss and having your world altered due to death and family secrets. But at the end: all those suffering and emotional stress you endured are truly worth it because this is unique and beautiful sisterhood story brighten your mood and it is one of the best young adult fiction novels of the year. Okay, now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s talk about this amazing book — a tale of two sisters who didn’t know each other and who are brought together after a devastating incident.

Stunned by the loss and reeling from the realizations, the half-sisters will have to learn what it truly means to be family. Her constant inspiration of her dad slowly died down, and you can feel the annoyance she later had for her dad. One horrible day, both Camino and Yahaira realize that their dad dies on a plane crash on his way to the DR. I feel this book is very personal to the author, which is why it struck those chords in your heart even more vividly. Elizabeth Acevedo explores all of those questions and tries to find an answer for her two protagonists. We take advantage of the life we have at the moment, we never really realize when it could be taken away.
