About this deal

The mug will only keep liquid warm between 120-145°F, so if you want something hotter or cooler, this mug can’t do it. While I don't drink coffee, I do drink tea, and because I drink green, oolong, and white varieties, I'm fairly well-versed on beverage temperatures. Use the Ember app to set your temperature, customise presets for your favourite drinks, receive notifications when your desired temperature is reached, personalise your mug and more.

My initial skepticism slowly turned to intrigue when I noticed how much coffee I would drink in a day because I would forget about it, it gets cold, drink it quickly, make a new coffee, rinse and repeat. If I pour 175 degree tea into a Yeti, I have to open the lid and wait for it to cool down, or wait for a long time for it to be drinkable. but it does seem there’s a sweet spot between just above body temperature and just below our heat threshold (around 150-160°F, but that’s also not a super scientific range and really depends on your own personal preferences). Ember Mug 2 : The good ol’ Ember performed just fine, but you get so many more features for a few bucks more with the Ember Travel.Preheating a double-wall insulated stainless steel mug keeps coffee hot/warm for more than the 3 hours of this expensive device that by definition reheats and ruins the flavor. Which means I eventually learned to unclench my jaw and open my mind to the world of temperature-controlled mugs, which keep coffee hot for an extended period of time. The Ember Mug was a fixture in my life for a long time, even though two things about it drove me nuts. Lastly, we looked at the design of the mug and if they were easy to clean and handle (some got hot to the touch) and pleasant to drink out of.

We would have liked at least one alternative, especially considering regular Ember Mugs come in white and copper. This setup took just a couple of minutes, and after the mug has synced with your phone, you can adjust the temperature of your beverages from the app. Overall, I’m not sure you can ask much more from a smart mug than the Ember Travel: it provides so much more than any of its competitors.I've also found that the 6-oz Cup fits nicely under my espresso machine and helped my espresso shots stay warm. With Ember's patented technology, multiple precision sensors are able to ensure accurate temperature and liquid levels. Both Embers and the VSITOO are app-controlled (arguably, these are the only “smart” mugs because of their app connectivity), and even amongst that group, the Ember Travel can be controlled via touch functions on the mug itself. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. The Ember Mug² is not just a perfect solution for the home or office either; the Travel Mug is perfect for days on the go, so you’ll never have to worry about your drink being too hot – or cold – ever again.

Yes—although this wasn’t part of our testing protocol, I did allow some of the coffees to go cold, usually by letting the mugs get to sleep mode, and turned them back on. Usability of the Mugs: Throughout testing, I looked at the materials each mug was made of and how easy or difficult each was to use. There are hotplates available where you can control the temperature, but because they don’t come with their own mugs, you have a different problem: these mugs are going to get hot. I can’t say for certain the Ember was the first temperature control mug, but it certainly paved the way for folks to enjoy consistently hot coffee without sticking it in the microwave. If you’re wondering if you should consider a temperature control mug, consider the rate at which coffee cools. It charges via a charging base that needs to be plugged in, and if the cup is on the base, it can keep a drink warm all day. Perhaps the idea is that it can stay hot forever when it's on the coaster, but then again who needs to have a hot beverage stay hot for a whole day or more? The main difference between the two mugs is Ember's smart technology, which is used to warm beverages to the user’s ideal temperature, whereas the YETI relies on double-wall vacuum insulation to keep beverages hot or cold.

The ‌Find My‌ network that the Ember Mug uses takes advantage of any nearby iPhone to relay the mug's position, so if it gets lost, you can track it down. It can keep a beverage at your desired temperature for three hours while on the go, or all day when on the included charging coaster. At one point, the National Coffee Association recommended a serving temperature between 180-185°F, and a few articles I read latched onto that range. One tester of the Mug 2 said, "I was especially impressed that it not only kept my coffee hot, but it also heated up lukewarm leftover coffee by 20 degrees in only five minutes. The charging base needs to be kept dry, and before you put the cup on the base, you need to make sure the bottom is dry.

I'm a slow drinker so I can exhaust that three hour battery life, and I appreciate the always-on charger option. The app even includes recipes like "Chai Spiced White Hot Chocolate" and "Beet Latte" if you want to expand your warm beverage repertoire. In the mornings, I bring the Tumbler down to my basement office, set it on the included round charging pad, and my coffee’s hot for hours. We didn’t have any issues cleaning it, but we were careful to avoid using any abrasive cleaners, per the manual’s recommendations. Apple will likely launch new iPad Air, iPad Pro, and MacBook Air models "around the end of March," according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
