About this deal

In the main commentary, Edwards and his fellow filmmakers Tony Leech and Todd Edwards talk more about the getting the tone of the film just right.

When she gets there, she finds that someone has thrown a rock through a stained glass window pane on the front door. She continues musing, telling the woodpecker that if she had a bird's wings she would fly past the nearest snowcapped peak, but she can't, as she is still just a kid in Granny's eyes. Montgomery then set up a meeting between the filmmakers and Maurice Kanbar, a successful entrepreneur who had made a minor investment in Chillicothe. As soon as she puts the receiver down, the camera pulls back to show that Granny is wearing skis, and her knitting needles are actually ski poles.

The score was inspired by music from the 1960s and the soundtracks to Planet of the Apes, Dark Shadows, and The Untouchables have been cited as influences, as well as the works of Henry Mancini. When he sits down, he is denied a drink by Grizzly, and also is struck across the hand with Stork's baton and taunted by Red. As Red rides by on her bike, Kirk climbs into his truck, and goes on to his daily job: selling schnitzel on a stick out of the back of his truck to the neighborhood children (much like the function of the modern ice cream truck driver), leading them in a singing routine ("The Schnitzel Song"). Realizing that Boingo might be suspicious if he tells the truth, the Wolf plays along with the idea and asks him if he knows how to get there. The filmmakers found this to be a poor method though, because it kept the individual skills of the animators from being optimized.

Be Prepared" was sung by Benjy Gaither and developed out of a practicality; the filmmakers wanted to introduce Japeth while the character is rocking back and forth on his horns, as though the horns are a rocking chair. At first I thought I had bought a low budget dvd but was pleasantly surprised by the comedy value of the film. It works on the idea of a story being told at the beginning and then told by each of the characters one by one from their perspective - effectively changing the story slightly each time - very clever and has some great humour - although some may be over a younger childs head (most kids films are like that nowadays) there is enough for the younger kids to love it too. Fortunately, the recipe book has not been taken, as it's locked up in a vault concealed behind a portrait of what we presume to be Red's grandfather. Although the quality of computer animation is not quite Dreamworks or Disney I did find the story well worth watching.Another obstacle during the film's production, according to Cory Edwards, was putting fur on the animal characters. Eventually, the image dissolves into an actual forest, exit into a clearing, and close on the door of a woodland cottage. Critical reception to the film was varied; although its script and voice performances were praised by many reviews, its animation quality was heavily criticized. He berates Twitchy, who tries to apologize, but he has no time to get the camera off because Red is getting away. A short time later, after hiking through several switchbacks, Red crests a ridge and finds herself in a high alpine meadow.
