About this deal

This method of learning to read contrasts with the phonics method where children are encouraged to decode groups of letters, which is the method employed in most schools today. Eventually there will be 30 activity books, covering maths and writing, as well as the basics of reading.

The book is in good condition for its age other than some minor signs of wear and marks on the back cover; a delightful addition to any library! In the UK there were three Kathy and Mark Little Book collections, each of four volumes: Green 1-4 (1973), Orange 1-4 (1973), and Turquoise 1-4 (1974).

If you were at infant school in the UK during the 1950s and 1960s there is a good chance you learned to read with the Janet and John series of books. Beginning in 1949, Nisbet released a version specially published for New Zealand, with the same authors and illustrators.

New theories were also being developed on how children learn to read and books and with ‘real’ stories were becoming more popular the Janet and John series was finally discontinued in 1976. I vividly remember thAT when I was in the top set in the infants and the school had just got new hymn books, there was enough for every child in the top two classes and three leftover, so we had a reading test in the infants to determine the three best readers who each got a hymn book. Library copy, 'class 3' in ink to top edge of front cover, ink stamp to top of title page, clear tape to spine, no scribbles. Janet and John 's presentation of a middle-class nuclear family fell out of favour, and the series was discontinued in 1976.
