About this deal

It’s the story of Stephen Fleming, a man who seemingly has everything – wealth, a beautiful wife (Ingrid), two children (Martyn and Sally), and a prestigious political career in Parliament. Damage is a 1991 novel by Josephine Hart about a British politician who, in the prime of life, causes his own downfall through an inappropriate relationship. Some of the people she encountered saw that trail and run away, most did not see it but were attracted to the sheer hypnotic elegance of the movement. There are so many themes and analogies in this book, it’s difficult to know where to begin… Actually, can you move past the fact that Stephen is sleeping with his son’s girlfriend?

The unnamed narrator seems to say to us I cannot repent for to do so would be to deny the very thing which brought me into existence. Force Majeure is a natural phenomenon known for its sudden unpredictable devastating and irreversible impact upon the lives of all within its vicinity. the car smash; the letter we shouldn't have opened; the lump in the breast or groin; the blinding flash. A woman I had known only days, to whom I had spoken only a few sentences, watched me betray my wife and my son. He is a man who appears to have everything: wealth, a beautiful wife and children, and a prestigious political career in Parliament. I read this book with an increasing sense of dread – there’s no happy ending to a story such as this. Josephine Hart has managed to create a portrait of psychological and erotic obsession that is so compelling as, for a brief moment, to suck all the oxygen out of the air. Luis Malle made a stunningly successful film with Juliette Binoche and Jeremy Iron in the key roles.Always an obsessive reader, I had read six books a week during a particular four years in a small town in Ireland after a double family tragedy, and continued this voracious consumption of novels after I left Ireland. A second screen adaptation has been released in April 2023 as a four-part limited series for Netflix, under the title Obsession. A quick read of the jacket blurb and a couple of choice quotes from the book and you know that this is car-crash reading – horrible, uncomfortable but you keep turning the pages nonetheless.

There are those born in rolling countryside who are really only at ease in the intense and busy loneliness of the city. Those who are lucky enough to find it ease like water over stone, onto its fluid contours, and are home. This treasure trove of letters, stories, essays, poems, selections from diaries and journals, and excerpts from novels covers WW II from seemingly every conceivable angle. Tsunami, avalanche, major fire spring to mind all could be conceived of as an act of God or the work of evil. Knowing cats, a lifetime of cats, what is left is a sediment of sorrow quite different from that due to humans: compounded of pain for their helplessness, of guilt on behalf of us all.Much is made of Anna’s dark past (it is dark but I won’t reveal why) although I found this aspect of the story a little too contrived, particularly the scenecs where Anna’s mother verbally warns Martyn that Anna has a tortured past and in another scene, when Anna’s stepfather does similar. In this diverting tale of the 21st century, poet and novelist ( Summer People ) Piercy explores a world where information has become a commodity more precious than gold.
