About this deal

I've always found the homosexual antics of James I particularly amusing, especially given he gave his name to the ever popular version of the Bible – or is it just me who sees this as being somewhat amusingly ironic? The Danish rulers, such as Cnut, were highly influential in the development of what would eventually become England and Britain, and their lives and those of their various family members should not be discounted. The other thing that I was especially struck by in the course of this reading was the realization of how deeply embedded within the English tradition is respect for the rule of law, which has obvious bearing upon a solid understanding of American history as an extension of English history. p>ISBN 978-1-78551-455-5

Who once escaped over the frozen River Thames?

But this book is just about the people who worn the British crown from William I to Queen Elizabeth II. Nope, all is fine, and due to Anne I's tragedy of all 17 children dying at birth or shortly before, we get the Georges. The Kings and Queens of England is the perfect choice for anyone looking for an illustrated account of the English monarchy from the Anglo-Saxon era to the present. Written 20 years ago but I think the last two decades (with the exception of a number of royal weddings and births) have been relatively placid compared to the dramas and calamities witnesses by this longstanding “firm. By submitting a review you grant us the right to display and use it in any way; please read our General Legal Notices for full details. So, all the monarchs are here if you need to consult a who's who of when different monarchs reigned, but the text is just a wee bit biased in their favor.

Yesterday a parent came over to tell me how impressed she was by the book fair and that you did a fabulous job of selling the books to the children first. An exquisite companion to There Once Was a Queen, this commemoration of King Charles III’s coronation is a gift book truly to be treasured. I bought it as a bedside read and because the book is divided into easy-to-chew sections for that purpose. This book does not suffer from that flaw; it begins with Alfred the Great, who reigned from 871-899.So let's follow one determined, dare-devil queen through London Zoo, over Tower Bridge and up Big Ben . Concise summaries of every English sovereign from Alfred the Great and his Saxon ancestors to King Charles III. For example, the wonderful Wolf Hall trilogy) I had thought that perhaps these non fiction accounts of the English monarchy from the Normans through to the current Elizabeth II might be a bit dry .

A mini guide to the life and legacy of Queen Victoria, complete with colour illustrations and photographs.Again the book focuses on just her rather than spending too much time on world events, but, whereas earlier the book criticized monarchs, here we start to see a do-no-wrong attitude, with no comment on how bad she was at parenting and how that ended up having a real impact on the world stage. This is a great book for the key information on each monarch and gave me a really clear mind map for how this country was formed. The master of making history fun, Terry Deary, turns his attention to 50 foul royals across history. Ian Crofton recounts a 1000-year tale of murder, invasion, usurpation, adultery, divorce, civil war and revolution in a manner that is as entertaining as it is informative.

The detailed, humorous and colourful artwork from bestselling Kate Hindley shows what it's really like to grow up as a princess. Although Crofton does mention interesting and/or menial notes and facts; nothing is detailed and therefore the reader is not left with a solid image of any of the monarchs. From the very first rulers to Queen Elizabeth II, this is the story of one of the oldest monarchies in the world. The chapters are presented with a brief character analysis, a timeline of events, illustrations of people places and events, reflective observations from contemporaries and sections devoted to highlights of the ruler’s life. What this collection of concise portraits of every single English king and queen regnant from William the Conqueror to Elizabeth II by various authors lacks in depth, it makes up for in breadth.

Fortunately for the water-loving monarch, it's Prince Albert to the rescue with an invention fit for a queen! If what you want is a book of short biographies, I think you would be better off to read the (much shorter and less dry) Horrible Histories book Cruel Kings and Mean Kings. Worth mentioning is that the quoted paragraphs are much too small in font size and will present some trouble for those with eye problems. It means that we begin with King Alfred of Wessex, whose reign was blighted by constant Viking invasion, like his successors.
