About this deal

After Dire Straits' Communiqué Tour ended on 21 December 1979 in London, Mark Knopfler spent the first half of 1980 writing the songs for the band's next album. The extra-wide 45RPM grooves on this edition provide previously unattainable detail, information, and soundstaging. The title of the album is taken from a line in the song " Skateaway" and from the outtake "Making Movies.

With new group members Alan Clark and Hal Lindes on board, Dire Straits embarked on tours of Europe, North America, and Oceania [6] from October 1980 until July 1981 to promote the album.Dire Straits also benefits from crucial contributions from Bruce Springsteen pianist Roy Bittan and the departure of rhythm guitarist David Knopfler. He even went as far as getting Springsteen's piano player Roy Bittan to play lots of sweeping arpeggios and big full chords when needed, and at the very beginning of the album is an extract from Rogers and Hammerstein's The Carousel Waltz, a very Springsteenian theme. Almost flawless album Amazing vocals, amazing instrumentation, and the lyric writing is truely immaculate here. While the mix is not of the highest level it’s still quite good, not pedestrian at all from my perspective. The three awesome songs are all on side one, the best of which is "Romeo and Juliet" (one of the rare songs that I used to listen to and get watery-eyed after the first chorus) although "Tunnel of Love" is pretty perfect too.

Group Has Sold More Than 2 Mil Disks - Dutch Delight In Dire Straits - Dutch Delight in Dire Straits" (PDF). The songs spark with a mélange of poetry, passion, and cohesion that engages the senses and begs to be experienced again and again. Mastered from analog tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's 180g 45RPM 2LP set of Making Movies breathes with reference-caliber airiness, spaciousness, dynamics, and separation. He seems to be putting Roy Bittan's piano playing in the spotlight instead of his own guitar on most of the other tracks. Making Movies is the record on which Mark Knopfler comes out from behind his influences and Dire Straits come out from behind Mark Knopfler.

Produced by Jimmy Iovine and Knopfler, the record – which contains many Springsteen-esque elements – features the cleanliness and clarity that have long been Dire Straits trademarks. Skateaway" is another brilliant song, the only song on which Knopfler really shows us what a great guitar player he is. The romanticism of Bittan's piano, precision timekeeping of drummer Pick Withers, and steady roll of bassist John Illsley come across with similar potency, scale, and verve.

Twisting by the Pool" was released on the ExtendedancEPlay EP on 10 January 1983 and reached the UK Top 20 when released as a single. Sometimes I see Rhino and remember their glory days, never even looked to see how recent this one was.

Four songs were recorded during the sessions but not released on the album: "Making Movies," "Suicide Towers," " Twisting by the Pool" and "Sucker for Punishment.
