About this deal

As Nokia no longer makes phones itself, the revamped version will be sold under licence by the Finnish start-up HMD Global.

It’s a future-ready phone packed with features including 4G VoLTE¹ connectivity, easy-to-navigate zoomed menus and audio Readout assist, wireless and wired FM radio, expandable memory with 32 GB card support, games and built-in torch and camera. To reinforce this fruity association, in addition to a black version, there is also a yellow version. After more than 2 decades, the technology has of course been improved, but only comes close to today's minimum standards. The 8110 4G is noticeably lighter and sleeker than its 20th-century ancestor, however: it weighs 117g compared to the original’s 145g, and the protruding aerial is, thankfully, no longer present. The 8810 made its comeback at this year's Mobile World Congress (MWC) – 22 years after its original release in 1996. The Qualcomm 205 mobile platform is optimised to bring performance without compromising on battery life, bringing up to 25 days of standby time from a single charge. What the re-released 8110 does have, however, is 4G network connectivity, dual SIM slots, and smartphone apps such as Google Assistant and Facebook – so now you really can access the Matrix from your Nokia mobile. Sometimes, when changing a setting, say, the direction pad and button combination proved long-winded, but this is far from a deal-breaker.

I haven’t been able to test the battery life extensively, certainly nowhere near as long as the 25 days of standby promised, but it certainly held up in my days, rather than weeks, of testing.Make no mistake, this is an eye-catching phone, especially in its appropriately fruity banana-yellow finish – classic black is also available.

Even in its silly, banana-yellow attire, the new Nokia 8110 4G just seems to tickle the nostalgia bone the right way. Its operating system has been updated to allow for app downloads and 4G coverage, but the design remained largely the same and features a similar appearance. The original had a microphone at the end of the slider, this doesn’t, probably because microphones have improved so much. This phone is no different: it’s built to take on life as you know it – with durable and beautiful materials, great feel, and an ideal balance of performance and battery life.Apparently, in Nokia’s survey of Britain’s favourite 90s cultural landmarks, 20% named the original Nokia 8110 as their favourite tech device of the 1990s.
