About this deal

The sophisticated stabilization works with any camera body to help compensate for hand shake, producing sharp shots from any angle. This is particularly so in good light and at relatively close range, where you can fill the frame with a subject without cropping, and aren’t affected by atmospheric distortion. With the 100-400mm at 300mm, however, the IS system (lens + the E-M1 III) didn't seem to keep things as steady and smooth. Even under very challenging light it quickly acquired focus and with the incredible image stabilization of both the lens and the Mark III there was little to no motion blur even when shooting from a very unstable platform, my kayak.

Add in Olympus' well-respected image stabilization technology, and you have some serious telephoto performance in your hands! On the older, contrast detection-based E-M5 Mark II, I found it was only able to keep up with relatively slow-moving subjects, and the first frame in a burst was almost invariably out of focus. You can see just how much bulkier the OM System lens is, despite its two-thirds stop slower aperture at 100mm. with the tripod mount and hood attached, and measuring over 20cm in length, this is one of the largest and heaviest Micro Four Thirds lenses. For flowers, I found myself stopping the lens down to F10 to F14 since depth of field is so narrow when shooting so close. Unless I was carrying the camera down by my side, I was always shooting two-handed with the lens securely supported. The sharpness is more than good enough and I'd not hesitate to use it, and if you are purchasing this lens, be confident to know that at 400mm end, you'd still get fantastic results.

Thankfully I had set the ISO to 2000 prior to heading out just in case I saw something worth shooting, but that was set for the middle of the lake where it was brighter, not for here, under this darkened canopy! Such trademark owner has no relation, sponsorship or affiliation with Olympus nor has such trademark owner endorsed any Olympus product. In fact, if you show me images shot with this lens in good light, without telling me you took them with this lens, I'd think you have used a PRO lens (40-150mm PRO, or 300mm PRO). IS lens from OMD World Imaging (sole distributor for Olympus products in Malaysia) to revisit the lens performance, this time in better lighting conditions.Overall, this is a capable lens, although its bulk is a negative when the strength of the Micro Four Thirds format is portability. Perfect for a variety of subjects and scenarios, this Olympus lens not only provides fast and accurate autofocus for wildlife and sports but has also been optimised for those shooting video thanks to a super quiet AF system. Autofocus is speedy, especially if you pair it with a phase-detect focus camera like the Olympus E-M1 Mark III.
