About this deal

Can i ask if any of you members have/are using the Olympus DPS-I 8x40 Binoculars for any astro work? Thanks for the input guys much appreciated, its pointing towards the 10x50s i think, i mentioned the 8x40 simply because i have read on here and other sites how light the 8x40s are in any make or model and are a pleasure to look through but i havnt actually looked through a set of that size so cannot compare the view or weight difference, i do know i had a peep through some old Minolta standard extra wide view 10x50s which were left in a holiday cabin for guests and i really liked the view on them but a bit harder to find at the moment. However, these coatings cost money and so to keep the manufacturing costs down on cheap binoculars, they will not only reduce the amount of glass surfaces that they coat, but also the amount of layers of these coatings on the surface that they do coat. The large focus wheel and intuitive, ergonomic controls means it’s quick and easy to adjust even when wearing gloves.

The binocular have built-in-dioptric correction that can easily adjust according to each person’s eyesight. The view starting to degrade from 50-60 percent out is par for the course for non premium binoculars. However as I have not looked through the Olympus or compared them I can’t be completely, but it is something that I have often witnessed with similar types of comparisons. Not the chewy, chocolatey kind sadly but these cookies are useful to help show you relevant content. Built with a durable, high-quality finish the robust housing resists any nature conditions - ideal for outdoor use.

If you don't know what the numbers mean the first figure is the magnification and the second the diametre of the front (object) lens. Yep, I've been looking at the tests the binos guru EdZ has filed on the forum, and as far as I can figure out he says that there were only two or three pairs that had edge sharpness out of the many hundreds he has reviewed: the very very expensive ones! These binoculars are a treat for all birdwatchers with superb magnification and come in a great carry case. Ideal for bird-watching, hiking, and sports events, this Olympus binocular offers a wide angle view with its UV guarded optics. pl and your browser accepts the cookies we assume that you agree with our policy and have nothing against saving them in the memory of your device. So far my best move has been reducing the magnification from the 12x60 celestrons to the 8x40 wide angle which allows me to see and enjoy the big picture rather than tiny little areas of the sky. However having said that I have reviewed a number of low cost roof prisms, like for example the Vanguard Spirit XF 10x42 in the table above that are not phase corrected, yet in my opinion they still produce an image that is far superior to that of very cheap binoculars.

I expect they are likely to be more expensive than the Olympus DPSI though likely less than the waterproof Nikon Action EX model. Advanced optical technologies including aspherical lenses plus coated lenses and prisms ensure a high level of optical performance by reducing image distortion and chromatic aberration for sharp images and a clear field of view with superb transmittance. A wide field of view makes locating a subject quicker and easier, especially when tracking fast moving subjects such as birds and animals. From what I’ve learnt so far, the Olympus has a larger OLD (objective lens diameter), giving greater Exit Pupil and the field of view is 10m wider; so is possible the Olympus will produce a better picture? Your eyes are prone to harmful UV rays of the sun, especially while bird watching or terrestrial viewing. Although the 8x40s are lighter and give a wider FOV I find that the extra 10mm really helps pick out those fainter objects.
