As ever the simple rules are made to work as hard as possible to provide one of the staple requirements of a good dungeon crawler: plenty of variety. Just FYI: the new aspects to Zoo Vadis (unique powers and peacocks) were added in (bolted on) by the good doctor himself.

In general, our policy was to keep a "reserve pool" of 5 XP in case someone had a chance to level (this only happened twice in 4 games) and otherwise use all of our XP to prevent Encounters. I recognized early on that this made it very easy for us to see what was what on the board, but I still found it disappointing. The game is so exciting, drawing you in that I found it very easy to just forget all the help I could have given myself. The fact that you have limited, perfectly balanced resources of powers; tightly controlled magic items; superpowers that change the battlefield, etc has a terrific impact on gameplay.

If it's white, something else happens depending on which scenario you're playing (for instance, the daylight timer advances, or you get to gain a new power). I actually think the game hits a really sweet spot in balancing skill and random elements, and it helps a lot that the game is so quick playing because it means that a trip into the dungeon plagued with ill luck feels more like a story with a bad ending than a waste of gaming time.

Almost every conceivable point of difference has been worked out and utlilised to make sure that a skeleton is not quite the same as a zombie and so on. The light rules weight and the well-known nature of the license also leaves ample scope for both official and fan-generated extra content to be squeezed in. I also looks promising as a cooperative game for up to 5 people - or even 6, if one of them acts as DM, which could give opportunities for more roleplay than is present in the base game. The group has two healing surges - two total, for the whole group - and if a hero reaches zero hp, they can use one of the surges on their next turn to resuscitate. Rather than post office leaving it on the floor outside and give no communication at which I have lost many items like that.

There’s nothing mold-breaking involved here, just a real sense that people worked hard to do as much as the could with relatively little.

I had noticed the increasing mentions about the rise of fascism in other countries (1930's) as the show went on, with the usual talk of not needing to worry about it.

If you save your Q or Z until you get a triple word score, and you always put something down on a double or triple word score no matter how bad your letters are, you will always win against someone who doesn't do that. Yeah, you can lose arms and legs, there are spinning floor blades and pit traps, lootable containers on the board.
