I own and love Lords of Waterdeep and if you add the expansion to it, it’s simply one of the best worker placement games I have played. The game includes a variety of dice which represent different types of warriors, each with their own boons and banes. The risks of sending small armies to multiple foes where they can be easily wiped out isn’t actually counterbalanced by an equivalent reward for those risks. When the game ends, the player who has earned the most glory earns the title of Jarl and is recognized as a champion of Midgard! Defeating trolls absolves you of blame, and also permits you to pass some of the blame for your historical misdeeds onto your opponents. Each are represented by a different color of D6 with differing odds to hit, block, miss or do double damage. Just take the dice you can’t assign to a monster and send them hunting for food for the next journey. Placing workers allows for the collection of resources and warriors, which players may then send on journeys to neighboring villages or across the sea to defeat monsters and gain the glory they need for victory.I love the theme combined with the worker placement but then throw in the randomness of dice rolls and you have a really fun, easy to play game. The penalties of never fighting the troll aren’t all that severe, and if you fight the troll every few rounds they become largely insignificant. As such you and your opponents may be working at cross purposes, or complementary purposes, at different points in the game and it’s hard to predict which way it’s going to go ahead of time. The ships require food to feed each of your warriors but the arithmetic of that is dully predictable.
