His characters have far more personality and his plots more clever intrigue than Edgar Rice Burroughs. Access to pure text is especially important for literary criticism and studies, as any conclusion drawn from erroneous or distorted data will itself be distorted. Anyhow, jealousy as driving point of contempt between female protagonist, effectively making a love triangle - oh don't we all "love" that.

Howard's tales of the legendary hero, as fresh and atmospheric today as when they were first published in the pulp magazines of more than seventy years ago. As for Conan, along with the upgrading of the quality of the short stories, there is an upgrading of their hero, which starts from something very simple, from a combination of all these characteristics of the ideal warrior but also of the perfect male, at least as they perceived at that time to end up to something more complete, to a man who has thought behind all his actions and a complete perception of the world around him.The innate superiority of whiteness is presumed in a strong way, with African characters treated as natural servants or simply beneath notice. The stories themselves also run the gamut from standard action/adventure to often quite dark fantasy that push up against Lovecraftian sorts of themes as Conan does battle with Old Gods and escapes ancient curses.

The last story took us back into the long backstory to Conan's eventual kingship, changing the focus of the series to Conan's wandering-rogue years, thereby establishing the milieu that this character is most associated with. The real Conan is more wide-ranging in skills, more intelligent-seeming, and far more vocal (speaking several languages, and able to captain a ship) along with his incredible agility, superb prowess with weapons and of course his superhuman strength and resilience. Overall, very entertaining and enjoyable stuff to read and I recommend it to any fan of swords and sorcery. He had much better explanation than that, but the gist of his message was just to relax and don't overthink it.
