About this deal

I've always just used whatever oil/grease was handy, usually Vaseline or automotive wheel bearing/chassis grease and never had any issues, up to and including lead acid car/truck batteries.

Only use the greases in connections that are well-isolated from connections with differing voltages, and never in high-voltage connections. Polybutenes differ from most other oils by decomposing at temperatures of 250°C to 275°C through a depolymerisation or unzipping mechanism. The 8481 grease lubricates and improves electrical connections between sliding surfaces and parts, ensuring good grounding connection. The silicone free 8463 grease lubricates and helps discharge static build-up, conducts heat, and protects against corrosion. We use two types of silica as a thickener in our grease range, both fumed silica and hydrophobic silica.

A conductive grease is never recommended to fix an electrical connector problem; a dielectric grease is always the best choice when choosing an electrical connector grease. The 8481 grease is similar to the 846 grease but 8481 is silicone free and contains more corrosion inhibitors. Your main goal is to prevent oxidation and corrosion of contacts with damaged plating and Vaseline is as good as anything at that job. Ideally a connector grease is used as a preventative maintenance action, it’s also a dependable fix for an ‘in service’ problem where it is possible to issue a service bulletin or other field service instruction for the relevant connector; this service bulletin could be accompanied by introducing the use of connector grease during the manufacturing stage or loom assembly stage of the harness/circuit.It is excellent for ground connections, rotating connections, rotary switches, variable capacitors, roller inductors, roller bearings, slip rings, slide connecters and potentiometers. I found this interesting chart of specific manufacturer of lubricant materials and I wonder if it is universal or only specific to this manufacturer. HCG is a copper-filled, water resistant, non-melting grease, ideal for application where low electrical resistivity is required. I wouldn't bother with products claiming to 'fill in the gaps' with conductive material for simple battery contacts - the current density isn't anywhere near high enough to require it.

It depends on what the seal is made from, certain kinds of lubricants will damage certain kinds of seal materials.

From our experience, people usually consider using a conductive grease on a connector as a reaction to a connector failing in service, rather than a preventative maintenance treatment. If the connector to be dosed with grease is anything but the most simplistic connector (such as a spade connector), the grease application method will end up being far too intricate and the possibility of introducing a fault will be too hight. g. automotive), then using a conductive grease on electrical connectors should be ruled out as an option.

They are designed to lubricate and maintain electrical and thermal conductivity while providing protection against moisture and corrosion. Such uses include in applications that the users believe other lubricants that include petroleum jelly may damage some products such as gaskets and latex rubber. Why not take a look at our article about how electrical connector grease works for reassurance and we also have a demonstration video. For example, it is applied to ball bearings in computer equipment where it allows static discharge to pass through the bearing instead of building up, arcing, and pitting the rolling element or fluting the raceway - accelerating wear.
