Together with wheat beer this Muenchener Hell style is the most famous beer style in the Bavarian south. A lovely Helles lager that I thought looked hilarious when I first tried this at a German beer festival back when we were allowed to see other human beings! We can deliver to an alternative address or on a different day if you let us know but we can’t leave alcohol unattended at your door or in your garden.

A perfect lager, probably the best in the world, and certainly the benchmark by which all other Helles must be measured. For some products supply can be inconsistent, whether that is at the brewery itself or how often we or its supplier imports it. A nice touch was a personalised message from Niall suggesting which beer in my box was their favourite. Hells (or Helles) simply means “pale” in German and describes the malty, easy-to-drink beer that is lovingly referred to as ‘liquid bread’. The owner, Niall, is always friendly, helpful, and does a lot to promote the local community and local brewers.The citric acid was a little overpowering and (where I live) I can get beer I prefer in this style for cheaper . Augustiner Helles has a superb balance of richness and lightness, with a slight sweetness on first taste that isn’t cloying or lingering. With a brewery dating back to 1328, Augustiner-Brau is the oldest brewer in Munich and the last remaining independent brewer in the historic city. Augustiner’s Helles is the Bavarian answer to a Czech pilsner but with a less tangy hop character, more balance and subtlety with a citrus fruit and floral-hop aroma.
