I came to adore Robert quite a bit in this story, as I said above, it's focused more on him this time and Lily takes a bit of a backseat which was nice.

This takes the kids on an adventure as they have to escape away from him as he believes Robert knows where it is. I have even talked the head into a little revamp of the library so that we can display them properly!When Professor Hartman receives a letter from Queen Victoria asking him to repair her mechanical elephant he sets off for London, leaving the children in the care of the mechanicals, Miss Tock, Mr Wingnut and Lily’s loyal friend Malkin, a mechanical fox. We are introduced to some new parts of London, filled to the brim with glorious steampunk elements such as mechanicals, mechanimals and airships.

A prisoner who goes by Jack of Diamonds is on the loose and hunting to find his rare diamond he lost and the moonlocket. One other rather small complaint I have is that Lily and her papa's conflicts weren't very satisfactorily resolved, but I am quite very happy with how things turned out for Robert- elaborating on this would prove to be very spoiler-y indeed, so I'll hold back here. I found myself fully immersed in this amazing steam punk version of Victorian London, where the plot ticks over like clockwork and the tension builds up like pressure in a steam engine. However, this one also discussed family dynamics and I think this story did well in showing that not every family is happy and perfect. Set in a reality where machines, airships and even sentient robots are powered by cogs and clockwork, this book is full of wonder, strange contraptions and novel adventure. While London prepares for Queen Victoria’s Jubilee, the city gets shaken up by the break-out of England’s most wanted criminal, the famous escapologist Jack Door.
