About this deal

I didn’t get round to it at the beginning of this year and I’ve been plagued with them even with such dry weather.

The Large Red slug and Black slug ( Arion ater) are either orange-red or black with an orange fringe. With the slugs safely inside, place a concrete slab (or any firm cover) over the top to seal them in. Reproduction occurs mainly in autumn and spring, when clusters of spherical, yellowish-white eggs can be found under logs, stones and pots. Neither of these partners in slug crime, live in sufficient numbers to make a significant difference to slugs in our gardens.Whilst at this stage the slug itself and therefore the nematodes are likely to be found by predatory ground beetles, such as Pterostichus melanarius and preyed upon. Nematodes are capable of surviving the odd frost; so don't worry if the temperature falls after you have applied Nemaslug. Most plants, once established, will tolerate some slug damage and control measures can be discontinued. Like life and nature, of course it is more complicated than simply pouring nematode worms onto the soil to kill slugs.

This will reduce the number of slugs laying eggs and therefore reduce the new population emerging in the spring. Each application of Nemaslug® will control slugs for six weeks, so for a slug free garden, apply Nemaslug® every 6 weeks. Unlike chemical pellets, the nematodes continue to work well during wet weather - exactly when you need protection against slugs. Biological control: Nematodes There is a microscopic nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita which kills slugs - particularly small, soil-dwelling ones - but not snails. They can cause damage throughout the year on a wide range of plants, but seedlings and new growth on herbaceous plants in spring are most at risk. The packs contain living organisms, and should be kept refrigerated on arrival, and used before the expiry date, approximately 3 to 4 weeks from date of despatch. Seed or potting composts are used for growing seedlings or plants in containers - a wide range of commercially produced peat-free composts are available, made from a mix of various ingredients, such as loam, composted bark, coir and sand, although you can mix your own. The article recommended making a homemade slug killing ‘soup’ by collecting 10-20 slugs and putting them into a bucket of water, add leaves and seal them in the bucket with a concrete slab on top of the bucket. The nematodes reproduce inside the dead pest and release a new generation of hungry nematodes, which disperse to hunt down further prey.

Ferrimax Organic Slug Killer is a certified, environmentally friendly pellet for killing Slugs and Snails. They cannot be eradicated so targeting control measures to protect particularly vulnerable plants, such as seedlings and soft young shoots on herbaceous plants will give the best results. Which slug species occur in gardens, and which of those are actually behaving as pests, are neutral or beneficial garden wildlife? If you have an allotment or garden and grow your own food, then potatoes will probably be one of your bigger crops as it is our staple food. Tidy up or remove any piles of rubble or stones close to cultivated areas, as well as stacks of flowerpots, and piles of plant debris. Many years ago I heard of a similar home made slug killing ‘soup’, made by drowning slugs in a bucket of water and pouring the resulting ‘soup’ onto your plants.
