About this deal

There’s a feeling of wonder about all of Sheldrake’s sentences which would disarm the most hardened cynic. By examining fungi on their own terms, Sheldrake reveals how these extraordinary organisms – and our relationships with them – are changing our understanding of how life works.

Something of a coffee-table book certainly, but a welcome addition to the collection of any fungi enthusiast. The tininess and beauty of viruses belie their power to ruin our lives, which is something that everyone can appreciate at this time. Each country has its own idiosyncrasies – its own selection of things traditionally eaten and things traditionally rejected. Foraging is an entryway into deeper nature connection, but in terms of fungi I recommend you switch this around: learn about fungi in general, then finding and confidently identifying edible mushrooms will be a lot easier. There seems to be a bit of a bias towards species from English-speaking countries as most entries in here will be present in one or more of USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or UK/Ireland.Location maps give at-a-glance indications of each species’ known global distribution, and specially commissioned engravings show different fruitbody forms and provide the vital statistics of height and diameter. This may be a slight under-exaggeration, but at the time he made the book Roger was certainly no mycologist, and nor did he claim to be.

I want to show my audience that we can all view the world differently, but there is one important thing we need to all believe, that we matter. Some of the best fungi identification guidebooks aren’t especially interested in wild food – and some have no information on edibility at all. Leading mycological artists have been specially commissioned to ensure accurate, detailed illustrations.About the author: Journalist and author of Witch’s Garden — Plants in folklore, magic and traditional medicine (2020, also by Welbeck/Kew), Miss Willmott’s Ghosts (2022, Blink Publishing), and more. One can completely ignore this section without missing out, but its nice to make it easy for readers who want to dig even deeper. The Voice in the Night (1907) by William Hope Hodgson (mystery/horror): A rowboat carrying a strange passenger approaches a sailing ship on a dark, starless night.
