I think this book delves into some deep concepts with a focus on just how far people will go and what choices they would make to protect their loved ones. Lizzie’s mentally unstable brother adds even more tension to the situation since he believes Jurgen is out to get him. I liked the different POVs: one was that of a married German woman and one was that of an American girl who grew up and also married.And while the manager of the program for which Jurgen works encourages the American wives to make their German counterparts welcome, many can’t reconcile themselves to being friendly with a race of people who may have been responsible for the atrocities they have all heard about.

Debbie Rix has written eight novels, the latest of which - 'The German Mother' - will be published on 31st July 2023. When historical fiction is done right, you should feel like you are transported back to that era - and I did. I’ve read many books, both fiction and non fiction about WW2, and in particular the atrocities committed in the holocaust, but I’ve never read one examining the topic from this angle — not that one finds oneself sympathising in any way with what they did, but the story gives some insight into the sheer madness of the nazi mind; I was gripped, observing the slow process of an ordinary man, a doctor, simply switching off his conscience by lying to himself as he becomes increasingly involved in those shocking crimes against humanity. This would be a perfect book club book and I beg the reader to please read the author’s note at the end of the book and to consider the discussion questions. She has to send her best friend, Mayim, away because she is Jewish, and Sofie’s block manager (spy) told the Nazis that Mayim was living with Sofie’s family.Found myself hanging on to every word and every plot twist… an incredibly emotional read… brilliant historical fiction, I’m eager to read whatever Rix releases next! When news about their family's affiliation with the Nazi party spreads, idle gossip turns to bitter rage, and the act of violence that results will tear apart a community and a family before the truth is finally revealed - but is it murder, revenge or justice? I like the end how the principies hold on and their first love remains even in a war or in any circunstaces. Lizzie, meanwhile, faces her own moral quandary later in the book, when it becomes clear just how much Henry was impacted by World War II experiences.

The scale of suffering in this book was beyond comprehension, whether in 1930s Texas, 1930s Berlin, or 1950s Alabama.Heart-stopping , unforgettable tale of ordinary people fighting for survival in the darkest of times… kept me glued to my Kindle through the whole book!

When the Nazi party came into power in Germany, Jurgen’s superior knowledge and talent in building rockets and understanding their unique mechanisms came to the Nazis’ attention. She began her career with the BBC - initially as the news reader on Breakfast Time, thereafter appearing as a presenter and reporter on a variety of factual and light entertainment television series.It is hard to read about Germany’s descent into fascism and genocide without finding parallels in the United States. This sounds really good, I love historical fiction especially when it relates to WWII and Graydon House is fast becoming one of my fave publishers. I thoroughly enjoy the intimacy and emotional intelligence of her stories, and I am already eager for what’s next. She has a gift for showing the story from both sides and somehow you find yourself routing for both characters! By filling us in on each character’s backstory, Rimmer creates well-drawn characters and helps us understand their motivations, fears, and vulnerabilities.
